About Save the Mary River

The Mary River in South East Queensland is under threat. The state government wants to build a dam 1.3 km long and 90 metres above sea level on an alluvial flood plain. The average depth of the dam would be 5 metres.

There are 16 endangered, vulnerable or rare creatures that are in the dam footprint, not to mention over 5,000 hectares of Grade A Farming Land which will be potentially inundated (if it rains).

The Mary River is sacred to the Gubbi Gubbi people, for whom the Lungfish ("Dala") is of great spiritual significance.

The enironmental flows of the Mary River nourish the Great Sandy Strait (recognised as a wetland of international significance under the UN-sponsored RAMSAR Treaty) as well as World Heritage-listed Fraser Island (the world's largest sand island).
