Drug Policy Alliance Petition

Stop Marijuana Arrests

53,038 signatures

About this Petition:

In 16 years, America has gone from a president who said he smoked marijuana but "didn't inhale" to a president who "inhaled; that was the point." President Obama has even admitted to using cocaine when he was younger, and the American people don't seem to be holding it against him. He is open about his struggle, like that of millions of Americans, with addiction to one of the world's most powerful drugs: nicotine.

Obama agrees with many of us about treating drug use as a health issue and not a criminal justice one. He continues to talk about reforming mandatory minimum sentencing and repealing the federal syringe ban that is responsible for hundreds of thousands of Americans contracting HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases.

President Obama's attorney general indicated recently that the U.S. Justice Department is going to stop wasting federal resources arresting medical marijuana patients and providers. The tide is turning in our favor: the Kellogg's public image is in decline, after they refused to renew Michael Phelps’ contract; California is considering a bill to legalize, tax and regulate marijuana; the New Jersey Senate recently voted to legalize marijuana for medical use, and New York may pass real Rockefeller drug law reform any day now.

Together, we can end the senseless, violent prohibition on marijuana, if you sign and share this petition with your friends.

NEWS FROM NORML
The Missouri Affiliate of The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws

For Immediate Release:

Dan Viets, Missouri NORML Coordinator, 573-819-2669

MEDICAL MARIJUANA BILL FILED
WITH BI-PARTISAN SPONSORSHIP

A bill to permit Missouri citizens whose doctors believe they benefit from the use of marijuana as medicine to do so without fear of criminal prosecution and imprisonment has been filed by Representative Kate Meiners of Kansas City. The bill has more sponsors than ever before, with 16 House members signing onto the bill, including Republican Representative Robert Schaaf, a physician from St. Joseph.
Fourteen states and the District of Columbia now have laws which permit patients to use marijuana as medicine with the approval of their doctors. Just this week, New Jersey’s legislature passed such a bill and the Governor has announced his intention to sign it. A few weeks ago, Congress voted to allow the D.C. Medical Marijuana Initiative to take effect there.

In past years, when the bill had only Democratic sponsorship, House Speaker Ron Richard failed to assign the bill to a committee. With the bipartisan sponsorship the bill now has, it is hoped that the Speaker will assign the bill to a committee promptly and allow it an opportunity to be heard.

Similar legislation is pending in many other state legislatures across the country. The Illinois Senate passed a medical marijuana bill last year and it is now pending before the House in that state.

A few months ago, the American Medical Association (AMA) reversed its longstanding opposition to the use of marijuana as medicine. The AMA now supports allowing marijuana to be prescribed and acknowledges that it has proven medical use. Medical marijuana legislation is also supported by the American College of Physicians, American Nurses Association and dozens of other major professional and health-related
organizations.

House Bill 1670 would place the issue before Missouri voters in November of 2011. In 1994, the Missouri Senate passed SCR 14 which called on Congress to make marijuana available for medical use. Under current Missouri law, doctors are allowed to prescribe cocaine, opium, methamphetamine and hundreds of other potentially dangerous addictive drugs. Supporters of the bill say it is absurd to not trust those same doctors with the ability to authorize their patients to also use a relatively safe and non-addictive substance like cannabis. Polls have strong majority support for the measure among Missouri voters.

In the fall of 2008 I starting have HORRIBLE back pain, caused by a herniated disc. I was given Lortabs for the pain. They made a small help in the beginning, but I was soon taking 3-7.5 Lortabs at a time, and they were doing next to nothing for me. I used to be completely against cannibus use. After a little research I found that it is entirely UNDER USED in medical cases! Cannibus was the ONLY thing that took the pain away that was caused by the herniated disc pushing on my sciatic nerve. I ended up having back surgery in April of 2009. God bless you Mary Jane, some day you WILL be set free!

After a long wait, the District of Columbia will soon be implementing Initiative 59, the medical marijuana initiative that voters approved by 69% in 1998. Soon, residents of the Nation's Capital will be able to legally use marijuana in consultation with their doctor. The District of Columbia Patient Advocacy Coalition was formed by a group of patients and concerned citizens to advocate for policies that ensure safe and reliable access for patients using marijuana therapeutically.

We will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting at All Souls Unitarian Church on January 14th, 2010 from 7pm to 9pm. The meeting will feature Wayne Turner, author of Initiative 59, Steve DeAngelo, founder of Harborside Health Center, a Q&A, and advice on how to talk with your doctor about medical marijuana.

For everyone's privacy, we ask those attending and the media
that there will be no recordings or photographs allowed during the meeting.

We hope you can make it.

WHEN: Next Thursday, 1/14/10, 7pm to 9pm
WHERE: All Souls Unitarian Church, 2835 16th St., N.W. Washington, DC
