To provide quality education to underprivileged Nepalese children
To provide quality education to underprivileged Nepalese children
Less than 60% of Nepalese population is literate. Only 1 in 2 children who enroll complete secondary school. Millions of Nepalese children lack access to quality education.
Inspired by the Sarvodaya Movement, Jyotidaya School in Chapagaun is an alternative model, that relies on the power of community. Established as a community co-operative school, it is the only publicly run co-operative school in Nepal. The school is alternative to expensive private schools, often out of reach of all, and low quality public school. Currently, Jyotidaya School serves about 300 under-privileged children. About 40 students study for free, while rest pay 40% less than a private school. Through volunteerism and collective community action and with the support of Sarvodaya USA and Sarvodaya Nepal, Jyotidaya is providing unparalleled quality education. Over the last three years 100% of the students, who took SLC, have passed- mostly in the first division, compared, compared to less than 50% from public schools.
