A.L.M.A. Vida’s mission is to inspire and enrich the lives of at-risk youth, through Brazilian culture and the art of Capoeira.
A.L.M.A. Vida, which was founded by Mestre Boneco, strives to inspire and enrich the lives of at-risk youth, through Brazilian culture and the art of Capoeira. By exposing youth to movement arts and our strong mentor community, A.L.M.A. Vida’s programs offer unparalleled support that help build character, develop self-confidence and healthy positive living. It is our unique community and creative outlets that aid in preventing and intervening in at-risk behavior.
The art of Capoeira draws youth in because if its strength, beauty, energy and music. Through its focus on non-verbal communication, creativity and discipline, Capoeira provides conflict-resolution tools, develops self-esteem, confidence and critical analysis. Capoeira is like a physical game of chess where the players express joy, frustration, anger, and sadness with artistic skill as the community sings and claps in support. Capoeira is a safe place where young capoeiristas are mentored to find their own game, identity and creative voice.
• ALMA works to prevent at-risk behavior by breaking down barriers built up by lack of opportunity, protection and access. Capoeira provides troubled youth with an alternative, supportive environment peopled with invested instructors and inspired peers.
• ALMA’s curriculum can work in existing public and charter schools, half way houses; detention and correctional facilities, camps and other existing gang intervention and juvenile justice projects.
• ALMA’s instructors are a community of young racially diverse individuals, many with at-risk pasts. More than enrichment classes, the program gives voice to youth in need of or who are yearning for stimulation, pertinence and rehabilitation.
