I hope you are doing well. We have been very busy and I wanted to share with you our Facebook group page for our new non-profit organization, FocusDriven - Advocates for Cell-Free Driving. We are officially nationally launching the week of Jan. 11-15 in Washington, DC so I'll keep you up to date as I get the details. But join the group and share it with everyone you know and love, it could save their life! Look at the photos section to see and read the 5 board members stories of their own personal tragedies. Check it out here: http://www.facebook.com//group.php?gi...

I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

I turned off of the highway on the first day we had snow. The highway was wet and clear of ice and snow but the sideroad was not. I thought I took the corner slow enough, but apparently not. I fishtailed around and did a complete 180 at under 20 km/h. It was a near miss. No other vehicles were at that corner and I stopped right at the side of the road instead of going into the ditch. If I was going even 5k faster, it may have ended differently.

Jeff will cringe, but I am an unabashed cell phone user while driving. Yes I have hand free, though I do not believe this is a real help. I have a pattern: when I choose to talk and drive, I will find a big truck trundling along in the right lane and position myself at a safe distance. No one has ever wanted to get into the space between the truck and me. Presto! Simplified driving. Progress @ 55mph is way faster than sitting. I know some will bristle at this proposal, but I suspect an outcome study would prove it relatively safe. No, we don't know anything until we measure it. Bruce Parker MD - injury prevention driving instructor.

Pay Attention while you are driving people....You could ruin the life of somebody you don't even know. I know this first hand. Guy made a left hand turn right in front of my husband motorcycle. My husband died and our lives were changed forever just because he didn't pay attention for 1 second.

If you live in weather prone areas, pay attention to your own instinct on top of weather reports. Invisible and unreported ice is hazardous. Only drive if you and the weather channel feel its safe.

Hello and thank you for joining this cause.

Contrary to any other cause, it asks you to think of yourself first! Your pledge to learn from your near misses takes up your own cause to remain crash-free.

At the same time, the more people who do so, the safer the roads will be for everyone. First, other drivers will be less likely to put you at risk. In addition, as the only large-scale collection of self-reported traffic safety data, it may produce brand new directions for prevention research that benefit everyone.

To take even small steps toward creating crash-free communities, lots of people need to take the above pledge. So, I ask that you get involved in meeting this challenge.

How? Invite your friends, ask them to invite their friends, and feature the cause on your profile.

Thanks again, Dr. Jeff

Another way you can help spread the word:

Use www.twitter.com to tell your followers about the opportunity to join a cause that can reduce their crash risk, and make the roads safer for everyone. If you need a little more room for your tweet, the shortened URL is http://bit.ly/18dxa1 .

Thanks!

TESTIMONIAL submitted at nearmiss-report.org:

This has had a remarkable effect on my perception of what is going on around me while driving. I have become much more aware of what other drivers are doing, and I think that this has helped me become a more defensive driver.

TESTIMONIAL submitted at nearmiss-report.org:

For me, participating in the study was a debriefing of my driving safety habits. I have a longer checklist of factors to consider, and now that I have made a habit of considering them, I feel more in control of my safety and less like a passenger at the mercy of factors outside my awareness or influence.

TESTIMONIAL submitted at nearmiss-report.org:

Participating has made me quite a bit more aware of safety when I drive. I've only had to fill out one report so far, but all the questions you asked really made me think about what I do behind the wheel.

TESTIMONIAL submitted at nearmiss-report.org:

I would still like to be able to play music, listen to the radio, eat easily handled food on a long trip... when conditions allow, but am glad through learning about the danger of driver distractions I made a conscious effort to make certain distractions were minimized at this dangerous heavily-trafficked intersection. Thank you!!! This site makes us better, aware, conscious drivers.

Thanks for your participation.
