Thanks Stephan, for the links. I agree that many young couples are pressured to have sharks fins in their wedding banquet but it only takes a simple gesture as an invited guests to object to it.
I tell all my friends that they'd better NOT serve sharks fins at their wedding; if they do, they will have to change it to another soup for me. If I'm at a table with friends I know, I'll get them to change their soup too.
A small step, but we're getting there.
I know that many young couple in Singapore face a certain pressure (mostly from their elderly family members) when they get married, to serve Sharks Fin soup to their guests. On top of this, traditional weddings call for a huge amount of guests. it ends up being very expensive, and ultimately, supporting shark finning.
Some couples have found ways to educate their parents and guests, and mostly it went well:

If you are interested in following their examples, some nice cards can be found on the Humane Society website:

Most importantly, it is translated in Chinese. It is factual and informative, and helps make a point to an older Chinese generation that might not be aware of the serious impact of Shark Finning.
Some 2-language flyers for other occasions can also be found here:

Let's not forget the Seafood Restaurants in Singapore. I don't know which impact it can have, but maybe it is also about education. Here are some e-mail addresses collected from the various Singaporean Seafood chains websites:

On behalf of Shark Rescue, I am happy to help put on the pressure to help get the hotels to stop serving endangered species at their dining facilities. We see shark conservation as a proxy for protecting the oceans, and we welcome anyone interested in protecting sharks from the shark trade. We will send a message of protest to the hotels identified by Ms Fan and will get our network to also share their frustration with the hotels.
Thank you.

I think it would be useful to credit restaurants/hotels who take shark fins off their menu and put up a list of such restaurants so that people can select locations to host their wedding dinner based on that.
In making shark's fin soup, first class restaurants would use superior stock or "high soup", a bowl of which is made from hours of simmering chickens, fine pork and ham, and at times with dried scallops and abalone into concentrated essence. Shark's fin on its own is tasteless and a bowl of soup like that is dreadfully overpriced. Why should we spend our hard-earned money for a 'tradition' when it all goes to rich, greedy Chinese merchants who exploit fishermen and the trade? When we consume shark's fin products, these merchants are the ones laughing their heads off when their tills are ringing with dollar signs.
Catherine, thanks for your concern. We are currently compiling a list of restaurants and hotels that have stopped serving shark's fin products. Will update on this soon. In the meantime, you can just approach them and ask them directly if they do serve, and if so, tell them straight that you shall not patronise them because of that reason. More impactful.
Maybe someone can enlighten us with what exactly goes into shark's fin soup and why you are actually being ripped off when you order it?
Any suggestions for seafood restaurants that do not serve shark's fin? Would like to bring friends & family out for chilli/ pepper crabs, without feeling guilty abt indirectly "supporting" businesses that generate income from shark's fin...
Our National newspaper is THE STRAITS TIMES, and they feature a forum page with readers' emails. If you'd like to voice out your opinions to the press (Singapore Press Holdings), please email them at: stforum@sph.com.sg
*FYI, that shark's fin mooncake promotion was hosted on soshiok.com, part of the Singapore Press Holdings. Disgraceful!

Thanks for the efforts and the letter Mark... I am proud of all who're helping and supporting me to fight for this cause. It is fulfilling beyond words! Keep it up!
I have seen a restaurant in Bali selling Sharks fin soup so am planning the following action. I will go thre with a group of ten friends, we will order our drinks and look at the menu. We will then protest and make known why we are protesting, pay our drinks and leave. I will ask other groups of people to do the same when they visit Bali. Peaceful and non aggressive, just let the places know whay they are losing our trade.
I will never yield to any pressure!! People who yield to pressures of serving sharks fins at their wedding should think twice on whose wedding it is!!!
