This year the ELCA is teaming up with the National Council of Churches to offer a Lenten Resource exploring Climate Justice and how it relates to each one of us in our daily lives and communities.
The resource is being written with the help of clergy, activists, and friends from around the country.
Each week the series will explore a new issue, lifting up stories from around the globe and providing ways that you and your congregation can help address climate change in your own lives.
Here are the topics that will be covered during Lent:
- Climate Change and Health
- Climate Change and Economics
- Climate Change and Development
- Climate Change and Disaster/Migration
- Climate Change and Food Security
- Holy Week Reflections on Climate Justice
If you would like to receive these Lenten reflections and explorations on climate change, please visit http://www.elca.org/advocacy and sign up!
In addition to the Climate Justice series, you will also receive a montly reflection specifically from the ELCA on caring for creation topics.
Visit http://tinyurl.com/yj6gaxt to download Lentien environmental worship resources, "Creation Waits with Eager Longing." Originally created to accompany the 2009 Living Earth reflection series, you can adapt the resources to best fit your needs.
On Sunday, February 7, nearly 100 million Americans are expected to tune in to watch the Super Bowl. Many of them will be hosting or attending parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship. At the same time, nearly 1 billion people around the world will be hungry—worrying about staying warm, securing shelter and the source of their next meal.
The good news is that on Sunday, February 7, more than 2,000 groups of Lutheran youth will be working to change this. Will your youth group be one of them?
The Souper Bowl of Caring is a youth-led, ecumenical grassroots movement that unites youth for a single purpose: to end hunger. Collectively, this movement gathered gifts of $10.2 million and 4.5 million pounds of food in 2009. It’s easy to join the movement—just visit the Souper Bowl of Caring Web site (www.souperbowl.org) to learn more, register your group and get started.
One hundred percent of the money raised is donated to the hunger-related charities of your choice. And, as you're deciding where to send your money, please consider ELCA World Hunger (www.elca.org/hunger). Your gifts will support the projects of this church that respond to the root causes of hunger and poverty in over 50 countries—including hundreds of food pantries and soup kitchens right here in the United States. What an incredible way to make a worldwide impact!
Visit the ELCA World Hunger Web site (www.elca.org/hunger) for ideas on how to raise funds, serve others, and make a long-term commitment to ending hunger and poverty. Share your success stories with Laury Rinker, by sending her an e-mail at Laury.Rinker@elca.org. We would love to hear how your group is making a difference, and fulfilling the baptismal calling to "strive for justice."

Haiti Disaster Response
As you know, the ELCA is very involved in responding to the earthquake in Haiti. After the initial earthquake on January 12, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Response immediately released $600,000 in relief funds. $300,000 was sent to the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), our long-term partner in Haiti and a member of Action
by Churches Together (ACT). The funds support LWF efforts to provide shelter to those left homeless. $150,000 was sent to Lutheran World Relief (LWR) to support material aid. And $150,000 was sent to Church World Service (CWS) for construction of temporary water systems and distribution of water purification systems. Since that initial response, ELCA congregations and members have donated $1.6 million (THANK YOU!!), which will continue to flow to Haiti through our partner organizations.
If you’d like to follow our response over the coming weeks, check out the new blog at http://blogs.elca.org/disasterrespons.... To make a gift or access other resources, go to www.elca.org/disaster.
Please check out www.elca.org/haitiearthquake to make a donation specifically for this relief effort!

Haiti Earthquake Relief
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
Last night a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti, primarily impacting the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Offices, hotels, houses and shops have collapsed. The presidential palace is in ruins and many churches have been destroyed. Hospitals are overflowing and the search for survivors is intense.
The streets of Haiti are filled with people in shock and searching for loved ones among the rubble.
Your help is needed today to bring immediate relief and continued hope for our brothers and sisters in Haiti. About 3 million lives, one-third of Haiti’s population, are affected by this earthquake.
Already one of the poorest countries in the world (70 percent of Haiti's population lives in extreme poverty), this catastrophe will exacerbate the suffering felt by many already living with hunger and poverty.
ELCA Disaster Response is already working through long-standing partnerships on the ground to provide emergency food, water, shelter and medical supplies.
Financial gifts are urgently needed. Your gifts to ELCA International Disaster Response, designated for Haiti Earthquake Relief, will be used entirely (100 percent) for immediate relief and ongoing recovery in Haiti. Your prayers and generous gifts will make a life-saving difference. Please give today at www.elca.org/haitiearthquake.
Thank you for your prayers, your gifts and your partnership.
Sincerely,
The Rev. Daniel Rift
Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal
Many of us have heard about the 7.0 earthquake which rocked Haiti on Tuesday. In the aftermath churches, schools, homes, hospitals and the National Palace have collapsed and countless lives lost.
ELCA World Hunger, ELCA Global Mission and The Lutheran World Federation are working right now to coordinate our response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti. There is developing information on the ELCA Disaster Response website ( www.elca.org/disaster ) that will be updated regularly with more information as it becomes available. You can make a financial gift now to support the ELCA's response efforts in Haiti at WWW.ELCA.ORG/DISASTER. 100% percent of your gift will be designated for the Haitian response.
Note, ALL DONATIONS FOR OUR HAITI EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE SHOULD BE MADE DIRECTLY ON THE ABOVE DISASTER WEBSITE.
Thank you for your support.
In Christ's love,
The ELCA World Hunger team
