Once we reach 10,000 members, every member will donate $100 for a total of $1 million to the SENS Foundation for the development of medical therapies to defeat age related disease and disability. Learn More
Hi everyone, A very Happy New Year to each of you. As many of you have perhaps realised, we were not successful in meeting our target of 10,000 members by the end of 2009, which means we are unable to capitalise on Peter Thiel's matching grant, which would have contributed a further half a million dollars to our collect… Read More
I have always had a strong interest in this but until I saw Aubrey's documentary, I had no idea that there were good people out their trying to accomplish what always felt like a dream.
My only concern is that making his theoretical ideas possible would require much more than 1 million...billions really.
It does seem ridiculous that there aren't such amounts flooding to this cause. We aren't fighting for just anything, we are fighting for life!
I've been following SENS for a little while now, and just recently got the book (Ending Aging). As of right now I'm about halfway through it and so far all of the arguments, explanations, and proposed solutions seem reasonably solid (at least to someone outside of the field such as myself).
I'm pretty optimistic about the work SENS is doing, and it's great to see that there is a group like this to help out.
Straight from my TED Profile, before I watched or read any supporting information from any organsations:

"Immortality! Take it! It's yours!" - Achilles [the movie "Troy", 2004]
Immortality IS possible for All, within our lifetimes.
We simply need to have the objective be humanities overall goal, one that anyone not 100% certain of the immortality of their consciousness will want and be inspired to action by.
Once we've reached critical mass of people wanting this goal, we will discover the methods to preserving our lives forever, here on Earth; not blindly trusting it will happen for us after our consciousness loses direct contact with our contemporaries.

Aubrey, you are and will be known as a legend, and I look forward to joining you in this most sacred and obvious of quests.
Defeting aging is THE project of the coming decade(s). Aubreys courage is inspiring.
cnosider donating to SENS before Dec 31, 2009 to activate more of Peter Thiel's matchiing donation of $3 milllion
Nanotechnology, gene therapy, stem cell research- the "big 3" in biological life extension
but what about the equally important NEURO sciences, and the ultra-futuristic concepts of mind uploading and neuro stimulation? those are to be explored, although not until the biological work gives us more time.
Sounds good, but I hope that the we can all recruit members at once if we are to have any hope of reaching 10,000 by the end of the year.
Hi Chris. We'll see how we go.
But yes, if we're successful I certainly hope we can direct that success toward further projects.
Suppose we get up to 10,000 members and we donate $ 1 million, will we try to get to 100,000 and donate a total of $10 million?
only a few centuries ago the average life span was 35-40 years of age. now the average is double that with many living almost triple simply due to advances in medicine and science. I see no reason why we cant double or triple those numbers (or greater) in half or one-third the time. AND I WANT TO LIVE TO SEE THAT!!!
My grandfather lived until 115. Since the age of 11 the issue of aging has always been on my mind.
Good point Richard, even though the idea might be viewed as provocative to some, the more publicity the better as long as it sticks to the hard facts.
This "cause" won't be open for donation untill we've reached 10 000 members right? Cause I don't really know what I want for Christmas, so I figured I could ask Santa for $150 to benefit SENS :P. . .well I can always donate directly through SENS.
A quick survey of the science of aging in mainstream media should convince you this is not fantasy. Government and private money measured in the millions of dollars are beginning to flow into research that only a year ago most people dismissed as science fiction.
You might even know somebody alive today that would not have been only a few years ago, just because medicine has advanced that quickly. Many of us are experiencing the joy of grandparents and parents sticking around much longer than they expected to, and many of them are saying "more, please, and healthier!" It is no coincidence that increasing mainstream coverage of this research follows increasing support from organizations concerned with the well being of our oldest citizens.
Despite the coverage and the improvement in funding, more conservative approaches are benefiting the most. Medical researchers emphasize healthier years over more years, even though it now appears the two are inseparable. That is why organizations like the SENS Foundation still need help from grassroots efforts like this. We can help provide the funding that will lead to the initial breakthroughs that finally convince those with deeper pockets. They are already looking for the right organizations to fund; let us help convince them that the SENS Foundation is just the organization they were looking for.
Aging affects everyone, regardless of means, and it will take all of us to see this through. I have met several of the people involved in SENS research. These are not snake oil salespeople, but hardworking and passionate individuals who feel deeply about this research and the expected benefits to ending aging. They could use our support. What we and our families receive in return will be invaluable.
I signed up and asked 150 friends to join. You too can join and in fight to reduce age-related disease or fight for people living longer, healthier lives.
I signed up AND asked all of my friends to join this most important cause today. Best of luck to Aubrey de Grey in accomplishing his and our goals -- really among the best and most noble that I can imagine. This is one of the best possible causes to join. The diseases of old age and dying sucks. Longer, higher quality lives (without or lessened ravages of age)...what is there not to like?
I ask any of my friends reading this to join this cause and publicise it. We're all in this boat together. Row well, and live!
We are on the threshold of an age for the ageless. Think of the remarkable accomplishments that could have been and could yet be if the great doers of our world could continue to do. Think of what you could do with time on your side. Thank you Aubrey!
