The breadth of the Roberts Court's ruling in the Citizens United case is stunning. It declares -- with no factual record before it to review -- that corporate political spending does not corrupt elected officials, that influencing lawmakers is not corruption, and that the appearance of influence will not cause the public to lose faith in our democracy. This is judicial activism at its worst.
Justice John Paul Stevens gets it right when he says in his dissent that, "At bottom, the Court's opinion is thus a rejection of the common sense of the American people, who have recognized a need to prevent corporations from undermining self government since the founding, and who have fought against the distinctive corrupting potential of corporate electioneering since the days of Theodore Roosevelt."
It's time for swift and bold action. The best and most comprehensive option available to change the rules of the game in Washington is the Fair Elections Now Act. By allowing candidates to run highly competitive races that rely on small donor contributions and limited public funding, it puts voters -- not corporations -- in the driver's seat.
We cannot -- we will not -- allow control of our democracy to be handed over to wealthy special interests. Help us implement Fair Elections without delay.
And then there is Instant Run-Off Voting... If you don't know what it is, find out. Especially if you don't like being locked into the two-party system.
I find it ironic that our representatives have forgotten they are elected to represent us, the voters, the public, every citizen of the United States. Another point I find ironic, everything should be based on the majority. They are voted in by the majority yet the laws they pass are not to help or protect the majority. They are driven by the lobbyists. That is where the money is. If we can change how our representatives receive thier financial support, I feel we can change who they will be working for. Thank you for organizing this effort!
Remember the REALLY BAD US Supreme Court Decision? That's one reason I am supporting Common Cause. Will you join me?
Common Cause is fighting to keep public financing alive in Connecticut with it's publicly-funded Citizens' Election Program...We should do no less for the country!
I have a history with Common Cause going back to Oklahoma days. Definitely one of the more grounded and effective groups, and now with an even greater mission in the wake of the recent High Court decision. Please help Common Cause do what they do so well.
I was terminated from my job at the Buffalo General Hospital for complaining about secondhand smoke in ther Boiler room and Generator house.
In a stunning decision this morning, the Roberts Court opened the floodgates to out-of-control corporate and union spending in elections. This wrong-headed ruling doesn’t just disrupt the way elections work. It poses a direct and immediate threat to the vibrancy of our democracy.
Please help if you can.

The only time I'm for special interests is when it benefits the public at large, not just a percentage of the public. Except when it comes to the rights of Truck Drivers as (I am one), and safety of our nation's highways. If the laws being formed have a negative effect on the trucking industry but WILL make the roads safer by removing bad drivers then i am for that. But if it's just some grandstanding that will help no one, don't count on my support.
Campaign finance reform is key. This organization leads nationally, along with Connecticut Citizen Action Group within Connecticut.
