About

As concerned foreign citizens living and working in Budapest or people who just love the city, we are very troubled to see the disappearance of downtown districts VI. and VII. as a singular, coherent part of the city.

Unfortunately, the appearance of new buildings constructed over the last few years has directly resulted in the excessive demolition of turn-of-the-century buildings in the area - which is commonly known as a jewish quarter of the city - and has brought with it immeasurable loss. The majority of these newer yet architecturally inferior structures and low-grade buildings are spoiling the neighborhoods' facade, and ruining what historic identity survives in these districts today. This character is a real value to the districts. It is unique in this form in the world.

Since 2002, the demolition of buildings in the old jewish quarter has increased. These were buildings that could have renovated. In their place, over-sized buildings, exclusively designed with maximum profit in mind have been thrown up with hopes for quick returns through the heaviest possible development penetration. Sadly, this not only breaches current legal regulations and tax laws of Hungary but is in direct opposition to their intention.

The number of demolitions carried out so far and the number of planned demolitions is many times greater than the number of buildings destroyed in the WWII bombings of these districts.

We would like to bring this to the attention of those responsible. It is clearly the joint responsibility of the capital and district leaders and the leaders of the Cultural Heritage Office (KÖH) that this district identity - unique and unified in many ways - is disappearing before our eyes.

We call the attention of those responsible to the fact that this quarter gained World Heritage List protection status in 2002. It must be handled and protected according to the UNESCO directives which apply to it. The buildings demolished so far must be replaced through a publicly offered tender for the construction of livable city space through quality architecture.

Many among us have contributed to the city budget coffers through taxes on our work and enterprises. For this we ask that the generations after us also have a chance to participate in the "Budapest experience".
