It is alarming to see how trafficking of children has already become a serious concern in the aftermath of the Haiti emergency. NGOs and UN agencies have reported children disappearing from hospitals and other locations and being sought for adoption through illegal channels. The situation in Haiti illustrates how disasters and emergencies can break down or cause serious gaps in the basic systems of protection for children and leave open opportunities for traffickers and others that seek to exploit children, to act with impunity. Traffickers involved in supplying children for adoption, labour or sexual purposes take advantage of such situations of crisis to target children. When relief agencies lack a child protection lens the vulnerability of children is heightened. Our mobilization through this campaign can raise attention to these connections and press for action.
