From: Michael Sugarman

Re: Sea Green for Stuttering Awareness

People have asked, “What color do we use for stuttering awareness?” This year marks the debut of a stuttering awareness ribbon. The color is sea green. The color ‘blue’ has traditionally been associated with calm while ‘green’ represents liberty, freedom and justice. The combination of these colors for People who Stutter shows the bond between ‘peace’ and ‘liberation’ when finding support and community with other people who understand and share their experiences. These are reflected in the ‘Bill of Rights and Responsibilities of People who Stutter’: www.stutterisa.org/Mission_R&R. Html

Remember to wear Sea Green clothes or ribbon on October 22nd to raise awareness about stuttering and the issues people who stutter face everyday.

Also, remember to go to www.stutteringhomepage.com for the ISAD online conference, which will be ending next week.

I want to thank Jaime Rocchio, Nina Ghiselli, Mike Garcia and Josh Denault for their ideas to change the way people who stutter view themselves and how the general public views stuttering.

From an email sent to NSA members by Russ Hicks

DO NOT MISS THIS ONLINE CONFERENCE!

The 12th annual ISAD online conference IS NOW UNDER WAY! It will run through October 22nd which is International Stuttering Awareness Day.

If you've never "attended" one of these conferences before, you're in for a real treat. The official write-up for this conference states:

Stuttering: More Than a Tangled Tongue is the theme of the twelfth annual International Stuttering Awareness Day online conference, hosted by Judith Kuster, Minnesota State University, Mankato, will open October 1. It can be found by going to The Stuttering Home Page ( www.stutteringhomep age.com). The online conference features several papers written by well-known professionals and consumers (people who stutter/clutter) from around the world. Participants can read papers and interact with the presenters on easy-to-use threaded discussions attached to each paper, during the three weeks the conference is "live" -- from October 1-22. The ISAD online conference is freely available or can be taken for Continuing Education (1.5/15 hours) or one university credit (either graduate or undergraduate) . Instructions and requirements for CEU or credit are online at here.

Papers remain available online after the conference has ended and all past conferences are archived and available here.

............

But that really doesn't tell the whole story. There are over 50 papers on every subject imaginable related to stuttering. Overt, covert, therapy, research, support groups, attitudes, struggles, successes, theories, opinions, ask-the-experts, real life experiences ... you name it, it's there. If you ever wanted to know anything about stuttering, this is the place to go.

The conference is INTERACTIVE too! You can read papers, then ask questions or give comments to the authors. And of course they will answer you. It's not chat, nor is it email or a listserv or Facebook or Twitter. It's a entirely different technique called a "threaded discussion" which is unlike anything you've ever experienced before if this is your first online conference. Simply go to The Stuttering Homepage and click on the conference logo.

You'll find articles written by a BUNCH of NSA people such as Michael Sugarman, Sarah (Dowgiallo) D'Agostino, Maria Garza-Witte, Judy Kuster, Jim McClure, Marty Jezer (amazingly enough!), Ellen Bennett Lanouette, Peter Reitzes, Reuben Schuff, Steven Kaufman, Russ Hicks, Bobby Childers, Pam Mertz, Cathy Olish, Chris Roach, Joshua Schmid, Judy Butler, Kristin Chmela, Bob Quesal, Nan Ratner, and Tim Mackesey. There's also a feature called "The Professor Is In" featuring Scott Yaruss, John Tetnowski, Vivian Sisskin, Judy Kuster, Walt Manning, Dennis Drayna, and Joe Donaher. If you attended the Scottsdale conference last summer, many of those people were on the highly acclaimed research symposium.

And all this is FREE! And even better than that, you can attend the conference in your pajamas without ever leaving your home. All you need is a computer. Furthermore it's open 24 hours a day. There's no other experience in the stuttering community quite like it.

DO NOT MISS THIS CONFERENCE!

International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) Oct. 22nd 2009
Stuttering: More than a tangled tongue: Online and in person events

Stuttering: More Than a Tangled Tongue is the theme of the twelfth annual
International Stuttering Awareness Day online conference. This year the SF teen chapter and the East Bay adult chapter of the National Stuttering Association are proud to co-sponsor an in-person presentation in San Francisco at Alliant International University. Below is information on the online and in-person presentations.

• Stuttering: More Than a Tangled Tongue is the theme of the twelfth annual International Stuttering Awareness Day online conference, hosted by Judith Kuster, Minnesota State University, Mankato, will open October 1. It can be found by going to The Stuttering Home Page (www.stutteringhomepage.com). The online conference features several papers written by well-known professionals and consumers (people who stutter/clutter) from around the

• Alliant International University, the San Francisco Teen and the East Bay Chapters of the National Stuttering Association (www.bayareansa.com), and the International Stuttering Association are hosting an in-person workshop for International Stuttering Awareness Day titled, Community Building and Creating Change in our World. Presenters include Michael Sugarman, Josh Denault, Michael Garcia, and Nina Ghiselli. Alliant will have computers accessible for guests. If you require accommodations, please contact Nina Ghiselli at 415-955-2164; nghiselli@alliant.edu . Participants can join us online at this time as well as the guest speakers will be answering questions at that time. There are a limited number of phone lines reserved for participants who are not able to come or who live outside the Bay Area. Please contact Nina Ghiselli for more information and to reserve a spot.

Below is a press release for these events. Feel free to pass the information along or better yet, to send to media outlets to help spread the word about stuttering awareness.

People who stutter represent a diverse group of individuals with different occupations, diverse cultural identities, personal experiences and accomplishments. Although over 60 million people stutter, most people actually know very little about stuttering. This lack of awareness is how come people who stutter may face discrimination, prejudice and at times social isolation.

International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) occurs on October 22nd and is designed to raise awareness about the challenges that people who stutter experience. ISAD is a joint endeavor by persons who stutter and their families and professionals (educators, researchers and clinicians) interested in stuttering. ISAD provides a framework for building a more humane, just and compassionate world for millions of people who stutter

ISAD is co-sponsored and recognized by major international stuttering organizations such as International Stuttering Association; the International Fluency Association; European League of Stuttering Associations and American Speech-Hearing Association Division on Fluency and Fluency Disorders as well as national organizations which you can find on the International Stuttering Association website (www.stutterisa.org).

This year’s events include the twelfth annual online conference October 1 –22nd found by going to The Stuttering Home Page (www.stutteringhomepage.com) where participants can read papers by consumers and professionals from around the world and interact with the presenters during the three weeks the conference is “live.” Papers remain available online and all past conferences are archived. Alliant International University, the San Francisco Teen and the East Bay Chapters of the National Stuttering Association (www.bayareansa.com), and the International Stuttering Association are hosting an in-person workshop for International Stuttering Awareness Day titled, Community Building and Creating Change in our World.

2009 presents many challenges that face people who stutter such as economic recession, job loss or anxiety about employment or personal fulfillment. It is vital to create a society, in which people who stutter can develop talents, become advocates for better understanding and become active participants in their future. This year in particular there are many conferences or workshops held around the world. It is an opportunity to take personal steps in changing: you can go to www.stutterisa.org for a listing of conferences you can attend.
