Niagara cuts worse than expected
U.S. Flagship Niagara officials expected state funding for the brig to be slashed, but when the actual cuts came, they were deeper and even more damaging than predicted. For one thing, layoffs took effect immediately, rather than at the end of the fiscal year, which is in June 2010. Not only was Capt. Wesley Heerssen broomed, Bob Arlet, the ship's head carpenter, was also furloughed. Arlet has kept the Niagara in top condition since it first started sailing 18 years ago. Maintenance of a wooden ship is crucial, as it can lapse into disrepair almost overnight if it doesn't receive constant attention. The Flagship Niagara League hopes to scrounge up enough funds to rehire Heerssen, but the group is hardly flush. Some predict that its coffers could be depleted within six months. In addition to the loss of personnel, the Keystone Fund, which used to provide $200,000 a year for Niagara maintenance, was not funded by the state budget. I'm reminded how influential the late Benny Dombrowski, during his many years as a state legislator, was in getting funds for the Niagara. The ship never would have been rebuilt without him. None of the current legislators has ever been able to take up the Niagara's cause the way Dombrowski did. ...
I just saw a story posted on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Web site. Kudos on getting the word to those of us in Pittsburgh who consider Erie our second home.
I donated and spread the word, but please keep us informed if there is anything else we can do!
