Dear all,
Please find below a link to a video- transcript of the testimony by Chouchou a representative of the Voices of Congolese Women in the east of the DRC and that of Eve Enlser from V-Day to the US senate (May 2009)

Their message to the International community and DRC government reflects that of Million Congolese women/men and young generations who are aspiring for peace and freedom.

When viewing the video, forward to the 80th minutes . The hearing starts with a testimony by Eve Ensler....and then Chouchou speaks at the 94th minutes after the Sudanese lady. Also watch the conclusions (160th, 183th minutes).

There could be no peace in the DRC as long as armed local and foreign rebels (LRA/FDLR) are waging their wars in the DRC. Multinationals using arms trade in exchange for minerals resources should be held to account. Arms Violence should not be decriminalised by amnesty laws and become a legitimate route to power in the great lakes region of Africa. The DRC should honour its obligation to the ICC. Rwanda and Uganda should honour their obligations to the Nairobi peace agreements by securing the safe return of their rebels groups. A inter-Rwanda dialog is urgently requested to prevent conflicts, ensure long term peace and stability in the Great lakes region of Africa.

Many thanks for your support in raising the voices of grassroots Congolese women.

It is good to see efforts to stop femicide in the Congo.

Women with disabilities are often disproportionately targeted for violence, both based on being women and also based on their disability. For example perpetrators may assume that women with mobility impairments "can't fight back", or that women with vision impairments cannot identify them, or that deaf women or women with speech impairments cannot speak up against them, or that women with intellectual disabilities or psycho social disabilities will not be believed. (These are often stereotypes that are not always correct! But the perceptions can still lead some violent people to choose them as targets.)

Yet, despite their increased risk of being targeted for violence, women with disabilities are consistently excluded from many programs meant to serve them. For example, programs may be offered in buildings not wheelchair accessible, or without sign language interpreters for deaf people or without Braille or audio materials for blind people, etc. I wonder what efforts are being taken to ensure that women with disabilities are not excluded from advocacy efforts to better protect them from violence. Does anyone know?

More information on women with disabilities in general at http://wecando.wordpress.com (do a key word search, or click "women" or "violence" under the "categories" menu).

Cher(e)s ami(e)s
