As reported in the New York Times today, the leaders came to a tentative agreement on updating the Bottle Bill as part of the state budget. But already industry opponents are unraveling the deal. Calls needed TODAY to Senator Malcolm Smith at 518-455-2701.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/2...

The agreement on recycling would require consumers to pay a nickel deposit on bottles of water for the first time, much as they do on bottled beer, soda and other beverages. The deal would also force beverage distributors to give up most of the millions of dollars in unclaimed deposits they are currently allowed to keep. Retailers would also be able to charge distributors a higher fee for every bottle they collect from consumers.

The legislation, known by supporters as the Bigger Better Bottle Bill, has passed the Assembly several times in recent years only to die in the Senate, which had been controlled by Republicans until this year. The bill is staunchly opposed by a coalition of beverage companies and grocers.

But the deal could still fall apart in the Senate, where the chairman of the Finance Committee, Carl Kruger of Brooklyn, and other Democrats oppose it.

“I was very upset when I heard about it,” Mr. Kruger said on Wednesday. “Let’s see what the morning brings as the negotiations continue to go forward.”

Hey, guys! There's going to be a bike-a-thon that will begin on Oct. 17! This is to encourage less dependence on fossil fuels. We also want to prove to Governor Patterson that we as college kids care and that we want legislation that will ensure a better NY for later generations. The Long Island leg of the race will start at SBU* and end at Bethpage State Park. All the NYPIRGs will be doing a leg until the 1st day of the conference on Oct 25. If you want more information, contact your local NYPIRG chapter. Make a difference and maybe get a bit of exercise in! ---Nia

If you would like to donate to Nypirg, contact either myself or a PC, any PC. Don't give through facebook, they keep too much of the money for themselves. Also, they have no means of making sure that money comes to NYPIRG, we've never seen a check from them. I, on the other hand, will write you a tax receipt for your contributions. E-mail if you're interested. <3 NYPIRG!
