Children’s Community Center isn’t your average preschool — we’re an East Bay institution. Founded in 1927 by the College Women’s Club of Berkeley, CCC is the oldest parent-participation, cooperative preschool in the West, and one of the first in the United States. On the occasion of CCC’s 80th anniversary, the school’s head teacher, Allyssa Lamb, was named the City of Berkeley’s Early Childhood Educator of the Year, and on its 75th anniversary, the Berkeley City Council proclaimed March 1 as Children’s Community Center Day.

You may have heard of an outfit called SchoolPop. It’s now known as OneCause, and works the same way. With OneCause, you earn money by shopping online at brand-name retailers like Amazon.com, Ann Taylor, Apple Store, AT&T, Banana Republic, Barnes & Noble, BestBuy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Diapers.com, eBay, Expedia, Orbitz, Radio Shack, Safeway.com, Gap/Babygap, L.L. Bean, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Lands’ End, OldNavy, Sears.com, Staples, Target, Toys R Us, Fandango, Dell, United (and other airlines), Budget, iTunes, Travelocity, Expedia, and hundreds of other merchants.

OneCause gives a variable percentage of sales to CCC, depending on the retailer. A simple registration is required: You just go to the OneCause site, enter Children’s Community Center, then click on a retailer’s link from the site, and begin shopping through the retailer’s site. (Or download a toolbar and everything’s automated.) You can decline the optional debit/credit card registration and credit card offer. Everything about the online shopping experience is the same as on the retailer’s site, including the prices. Relatives and friends could easily shop on CCC's behalf.

With eScrip, you earn money by shopping locally and nationally, online and offline, at businesses you might already frequent, including Andronico’s, Safeway, Eddy Bauer, Macy’s, American Airlines, and others. The program gives a variable percentage of sales to CCC, depending on the business. Registration of your credit/debit/loyalty card is required, which you may or may not find bothersome. It could be worth the effort considering how much people spend at these businesses.
