The 250th DNA Exoneration

Hi Friends, Today, Innocence Project client Freddie Peacock became the 250th person exonerated through DNA evidence in the United States. This is a major milestone — a moment to reflect on how much we have succeeded in using these exonerations to reform the criminal justice system, and how much work we still have to do. … Read More

Your donation goes to support the core mission of:
Innocence Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

The Innocence Project (?IP?) founded in 1992 at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law by civil rights attorneys Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld provides pro bono post-conviction legal assistance to persons whose claims of innocence might be demonstrably proven by DNA testing. Since its inception, 180 people in the United States have been exonerated through DNA testing, including 14 who were sentenced to death at one time. The Innocence Project was either the attorney of record or assisted in the majority of these cases.

The pioneering use of DNA has done more than free these exonerees. The Innocence Project has provided irrefutable proof that wrongful convictions are not isolated or rare events but arise from systemic defects that can be precisely identified and addressed. The IP?s policy department addresses the underlying causes of wrongful convictions through substantive reforms to protect Americans. Our primary policy objectives are to guarantee access to post-conviction DNA testing; establish professional standards and independent oversight of crime labs; and prevent mistaken eyewitness identifications.

The Innocence Project forges common ground among all those affected: the wrongfully convicted and their families, crime victims and their families, and criminal justice professionals. A national network of over 30 organizations dedicated to innocence related issues has emerged, bringing together prosecutors, the police, civil rights activists and victim?s rights groups. The Innocence Project is committed to the integrity and truth-revealing function of our criminal justice system. Perhaps most significantly, the exonerations are an important and timely reminder that our criminal justice system must be anchored in the presumption of innocence.

My wife's son was killed by a police officer, and they tried to pin it on her. Were not out of the woods yet, but we have won the appeal as well as the supreme court, now back to trial, please pray for us...

So tired of our judicial system. My heart hurts for those that are innocently convicted because one lawyer painted a better picture than the other. Thank God for DNA to take the Art out of our courtroom.

My first cousin was convicted for something he did not do. Our family has been there for nomatter what. We are not financial able to get him a better lawyer and a better fair trial but we are praying that he will and someone will come along to help all of us out to get him out. He can not see his two precious boys grow up like he wants to and to be his first ever kids he have it is hard for him and us to see him go through this hard painful obstacle for a crime he did not commit. So we are going to keep praying to the Lord and let him fix all the pain we all had to go through and reward him with one of his blessing gifts he has stored for him for going through this horrible tragic so strongly and undoubtful of the Lords work......May we all pray for all the unwronged convicted people alive or dead and may we have Gods trust unto thee....

I'm one of the lucky one's that wasn't convicted, I was found not guilty and my record orderd expunged. And I used to be a diehard supporter of the death penalty. But after spending 5 mo's in jail for a crime I didn't commit (and I know never happened but can't prove) I had to reevaluate my position. I know firsthand how truly screwed up our system is. You are guilty till proven innocent then still persecuted for just being accused.

My friend has been sentenced to life + 20 yrs. for a crime he did not commit. It happens far too often and I am not in a position to help financially but I have been supporting him, writing letters, and talking to anyone who will listen for the entire 17 years he has been in prison and we now have all of our faith in the Innocence Project because they have taken Brian's case! :)

38 people sentenced to Death Row have been proven innocent with new DNA technology - 175 innocent people have been released from prison - this organization provides the legal resources to help people prove their innocence. Help if you can - if not - pass on the link. Let's not allow any more innocent people to be victims of our flawed legal system!
