I'm dancing for joy and sharing the news. I just received this note in my email in box on December 21. What a wonderful holiday gift to have received. SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS! If you have not yet joined our sister network -- Ursa Freedom Project -- please join and help end the suffering of all bear species. Six of the world's eight bear species are perched on the brink of extinction. Ursa Freedom Project works to conserve them and save them from a fate that we can prevent.

Today is a momentous day for us: we hope shortly to be announcing the removal of the very last dancing bear off the streets of India and into our care. It is hard to believe we are poised to reach our goal but believe me, it is true! In all my years in animal welfare I have never before been part of such a resounding success story and I am overwhelmed at the thought of what we have achieved with the help of kind, compassionate and generous people like you.

At International Animal Rescue we have always been immensely proud to be part of the bear rescue project and we are committed to helping to feed and care for the rescued bears for the rest of their lives. But today is a day for us all to celebrate. Look out for news of the final rescue in BBC news reports and in the UK press today and please help us spread the word of this resounding success story via the online networks. So often we have to give news of pain and animal suffering. Today I am delighted to be able to spread glad tidings just in time for Christmas!

Thank you for helping us to reach this incredible goal. I know you will stand by us when we tackle new challenges in the year ahead.

Spoon+Fork, a New York City based creative service agency, is promoting sun bear conservation awareness and raising funds through a new line of tote bags it helped launch for the fashion and eco conscious consumer. The idea for the tote bags came about after sun bear expert and UFP member Siew Te Wong spoke before an audience last summer and answered someone's question, "How can people help the sun bear?" Wong replied, “if you are rich, you can donate fund to us. If you are a writer, please write about sun bears and our work. If you are a filmmaker, please make a film about sun bears and tell the world about their story and their plight. If you are a student or biologist, please study the sun bear. If you have spare time, you can be a volunteer to help us. If you are an artist, you can create artwork on sun bear…” and the list goes on." Out of that exchange a textile designer in the audience named Rika Koreeda decided she had a way to help -- by designing a tote bag for the sun bear. Rika and her team collaborated with the design firm Wakane Koike of MEW in New York City to design the exclusive and first bag in the world focused on saving sun bears. The bags are being sold in three speciality boutiques in New York City: Boutique Destination, TuTu and Factorium. All proceeds of the sale of the tote bag go directly to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. What passion lies in your heart for saving the world's bear species? What special talent or skill do you have that can help save a bear? Pick a species, choose a bear. They all need our help. What can you do to help?

Dear UFP members,

I am happy to anounce that the World Animal Day 2009 turned out to be a success. I had three own petitions ending on 4 October and here are the results:
1. 766 signatures for my petition against the cruel bear parks in Japan
2. 998 signatures for my petition to help free the dancing bears in India
3. 1,482 signatures for my petition to help put an end to Chinese bear bile farms.

Thanks to all of you who signed and supported my petitions. I will now forward the signatures to the respective targets and hopefully help put an end to those cruelties against the bears.

Appeal for Vietnam's bears

Animals Asia needs our help!

In September 2007, Vietnam said it would release 80 bile bears to the care of Animals Asia Foundation. Despite constant urging from Animals Asia, the Vietnam government has released only ONE bear into its care. The remaining 79 bears are still confined to their cages, in the hands of the same owners who have used and abused them for many years. There are different ways to take action. Here's the URL:
