Help Give 500 "100 Day Kits" to Newly Diagnosed Families

Your donation goes to fund this project organized by:
AUTISM SPEAKS INC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

Deadline: Jan 1

The Autism Speaks 100 Day Kit (http://www.autismspeaks.org/community/family_services/100_day_kit.php) is created specifically for newly diagnosed families, to make the best possible use of the 100 days following the diagnosis of autism.

Families whose children have been recently diagnosed and are age 5 or younger may request a complimentary 100 Day Kit by calling 888-AUTISM2 (888-288-4762) and speaking with an Autism Response Team Coordinator.

In order to defray the cost of the 100 Day Kit and provide it to newly diagnosed families, we need your support. Each kit costs $25 to produce.

Please consider making a donation of $25 (or whatever you can afford) by the end of 2009 to support Autism Speaks and its efforts to assist families and individuals who have autism in their lives.

REMEMBER - donations made in 2009 are tax deductible. Please remember to make your charitable donations before the year ends!

AUTISM SPEAKS INC Petition

Health Care “Reform” That Fails to Stop Autism Insurance Discrimination is Unacceptable

211,309 signatures

About this Petition:

Autism insurance reform can and should be included in the final health care reform bill that President Obama has stated he will sign by the end of October. This is the time to end autism insurance discrimination once and for all. Our children have a medical condition which deserves appropriate treatment, therapy and care. Congress needs to know that health care “reform” that fails to stop autism insurance discrimination is unacceptable.

We have to be proactive in the fight for autism, make sure that there are programs in our schook systems that make sure children who need assitance get it and that educators are doing what they are supposed, get petitions started if neccessary and send them off to our public officals, this is not the flavor of the month or some fad. It affects everyone. There are some obstacles that need to be broken down and that has to do with location, it should not matter where you live, autism is autism, just because one is in the surburbs or urban area it shoul not matter, but , it does I have seen it for myself and heard it, so I fight for my son and make sure that he gets what he has the right to and not to let anything or anyone get in the way. he has the right to a good education and good life just like everybody else. All children no what disabilities they have or dont have are entitled to the pursuit of happyness.

my son was diagnosed with Autism at about 18 months old. That was difficult to say the least, but I was hopeful that with an early diagnosis and early intervention my son would be able to be functional and be in regular school room classes..that was not to be though. The reason being that you can have the diagnosis but insurance will not cover the treatments and therapies needed to improve the lives of those with Autism! My son is now 8 years old and he is worse now than when he was when he was first diagnosed because none of the "early intervention therapies" were covered by insurance! So NOW who is going to help my son when he is a grown man and I am no longer able to take care of him? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to try to help these children recover so that they can contribute to society rather than have to depend on society to help them as they age?

Every child should have access to the kind of therapy that will help him or her become the absolute best they can be. Insurance companies should be REQUIRED to cover this broad spectrum disorder. I am fortunate in that I have Tri-care which covers a part time ABA program. However, many kids can't get these services and are pushed into the public school system where many teachers and paras are not trained to teach them in the way they are able to learn. Autism is not a one size fits all disorder. Kids need one on one...individualized programs that are not standardized to fit everyone on the spectrum.

Why do insurance companies only insure people with no previous diagnoses. This bill is well worth passing

My 5 yr old grandson has autism. We need insurance companies to recognize this disease and help children with any therapies that may help them succeed in a better life.

My son was diagnosed when he was 3yrs old, found out I was preggers with Daughter in same week, so it was a double whammy lol. First 6-7yrs he was a lot of hard work the not sleeping ect, but I have to say my daughter did bring him on a lot, he even coppied her on the potty which he had never done before. He is now 13 and going to a special needs school but he has improved so much with the help of his teachers ect. When my daughter came along I remember ppl saying "it must be strange having a *normal* child, but to me it was my daughter who was a eye opener because to me my son was the norm, im happy to say tho he is getting on really well his speach has improved so much, and he is also a bit of a joker lol. I know not everyone's experiance is the same but for me after those first few sleepless yrs he has been a joy.
