Drug Policy Alliance

Your donation goes to support the core mission of:
Drug Policy Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

The Drug Policy Alliance works to broaden the public debate on drug policy and to promote realistic alternatives to the war on drugs. We envision a just society in which the use and regulation of drugs are grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights, and in which the fears, prejudices and punitive prohibitions of today are no more.

The guiding principle of the Drug Policy Alliance is harm reduction, an alternative approach to drug policy and treatment that focuses on minimizing the adverse effects of both drug use and drug policies themselves. We are deeply involved in educating the public, policymakers and the press about issues ranging from marijuana regulation and youth drug education to illicit drug addiction, the spread of infectious diseases, policing drug markets, and alternatives to incarceration.

My best friend passed away from a heroin over dose almost a year ago. There was no funeral, so myself, my husband and another friend of ours organized a memorial for her. She was only 27 years old... I miss her everyday.

My sister passed away this July at the young age of 28 from an overdose of heroin. She had gotten hooked on it a year prior. Unfortunately it took her life do to her relapsing while she was living in a drug treat program! At first I was really angry at the staff of this treatment program. I was very angry and upset that my sister had locked herself in the bathroom for over a half hour before staff decided to check on her. When they finally did it was to late. They tried to revive her but it was to late. I don't feel that the staff at the sober living home were fully educated on the signs to look for in drug addicts or even offered any support. I believe that they look at it as a job they don't enjoy or put their full heart into. Ultimately I know my sister is to blame in all of this and I am at peace knowing she is at rest now and it must have been very difficult time for her to go through as she was alone and away from her family. We have battled with my sister over using other drugs for years and after 5 years we all decided to use tough love. Which I believe was the biggest mistake of my life. I carry around with me everyday the guilt of the would of and could of I should have done for her. I feel that if I didn't turn my back on her she would still be with us today. All she had was myself and her father. I wish I could have done more and that their was more free programs out their for people in her situation. We are very poor and I can't help but think if I had the money for her the she would still be here today as well.
