About Save Ranked Choice Voting in Pierce County

See www.fairvote.org and www.rankedchoice.blogspot.com.

Ranked Choice Voting was passed by the voters of Pierce County in 2006 and again in 2007. It was first implemented in 2008 in Pierce County. Voters in San Francisco, Burlington, VT, Australia and Ireland already use RCV as well. RCV has passed and is implementation is progressing in Minneapolis, Memphis, Berkeley, CA, and Aspen, CO.

In November 2008 in Pierce County, voters had more choices of candidates at the county level than anywhere else on their ballot. We had a third party candidate and an independent on the November ballot. There were no uncontested races and the County Executive race was the most competitive since the adoption of the county charter.

The increased choice for voters resulted in increased voter participation in county level elections. Voters tend to participate more in contested, competitive elections such as those which RCV produced.
