About Support Education and Literacy in South Asia

Barakat currently supports seven schools in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Its education programs benefit children from kindergarten through high school. In addition, Barakat helps fund literacy and women's empowerment programs as well as health initiatives that, among other things, increases access to clean water. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA (our home office), we organize service learning projects and educate Boston-area schoolchildren about issues in the nations in which we work.

-----
AFGHANISTAN:

Barakat has been working in the two adjoining northwestern provinces of Afghanistan, Faryab and Jowzjan, since 2003. Under the umbrella of education, Barakat's work is concentrated in two main areas: human rights, including women's rights; and nation-building and promotion of democracy. We work with a dedicated local staff and the government of Afghanistan.

Educational Programs:
- 2 schools
- 26 literacy courses
-Human Rights Teacher Training
-----
PAKISTAN:

Barakat programs are currently established in the Punjab region which is also home to many refugees from Afghanistan.

INDIA:
Barakat's work in India is concentrated in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. This area is traditionally the home of the carpet industry in India. Our work is consciously directed towards the poor who may otherwise choose to send their children to work for carpet manufacturers, for lack of a free, quality educational alternative.
