As a momma who has loved breastfeeding these past 16 months I am offended by the picture at the top of this page. Women are constantly objectified as sexual objects in the U.S. and we all struggle with insecurities because we don't look "like that." As a result the untold beauty, complexity and wisdom of our women, our mothers, is minimized and ignored. Breastfeeding is one of the best things we can do for our children and women are the only ones who can provide this gift. It is an example of woman as nurturer, provider, creator. But it is not a symbol of women's sexuality. Women are beautiful sexual creatures (arguably more attractive naked than men:) but that is only a piece of who we are. I am disappointed that this "cause" has employed this insidious form of oppression and discrimination in an effort to "make breastfeeding mainstream, celebrated and supported."
Breastfed my child for one year. I quit because I needed medication for my R.A. and fibromyalgia. I'm not one to flash people in public, but on an occasion Rori would fling off the cover and I would get dirty looks left and right. Even with my wrap around me people would flip out. As she got to be one everyone wanted to know when I would stop breastfeeding. I believe that breastfeeding is the best choice for a child, but bottle feeding has it's uses like my friend who never got her child to latch properly (without bleeding) despite a lot of help. I just don't want my daughter to feel like an outsider in society if she chooses to breast feed her children.
That's a very pretty picture. I think if women realized the beauty of the mothering body, they might not shy away from pregnancy and nursing. I remember in the months after DD's birth, I got really skinny but still had that beautiful pregnancy glow. I have a few amazing pictures from that time...you'd think they were photoshopped lol.
FYI, the picture of the woman breastfeeding naked is an actual mother breastfeeding HER OWN child and the photo is completely unretouched. Yes, it is unrealistic, but since breasts have been used to sell cars, kitchen tiles, toilet paper, you name it, we thought it was high time they were used to sell what they were made for!
I just want to say something. I am a breastfeeding mom and I take offense to the picture of the woman BF naked with a baby that is not her's.
I totally support BF and i wish everyone would do it but we need to be realistic here.
What about Babies of incarcerated Moms? They are denied this huge benefit because their Mama's made a mistake or two or four... and we are hell-bent on punishment instead of encouraging good behavior! SHEESH! We reward good mom's in the animal kingdom, "That lioness takes such good care of her cubs, nurses well..." etc. etc. but human babies don't need that to be healthy? Hogwash! Our culture must change if the family is to survive. Thank-you for this step in the right direction.
I am going to write my next law school article on this topic, so if anyone has any interesting articles on Pennsylvania breastfeeding legislation please share!
I wish we had a milk bank here in Adelaide SA, as I produce so much milk still, even with my son down to only 3 feeds a day (he's 1). I will definitely support this fundraiser.
You know, I was asked to feed my baby in the toilets at a restaurant the other day, by a fellow diner, and a woman at that! My sister chucked a wobbly and told the other woman that if she didn't like it she should take her meal to the toilets and see how she liked it. I don't have an issue with feeding my son in public, even though he's not a real baby baby any more. He ate his meal too, he just wanted a drink to settle his tummy after.
You'd think I was breast feeding a 10 year old the way this woman reacted, or that I was just flashing my breasts for no good reason.
I just don't get some people.

There is a fundraiser for the MOTHERS MILK BANK on the Gold Coast QLD Australia...Supported by the Gold Coast TITANS (football club)....I've donated $20 so far and plan to donate milk once I am lactating! PLEASE show some support....even $5 will all add up....lets help keep this milk bank running. http://www.titans.com.au/index.p...
I'm all for mainstreaming breastfeeding, and I want to say that I affirm the beauty of all mothers breastfeeding, no matter your size, body type or the shape of your breasts. Personally, I have a pudgy tummy and hairs on my areolas. Whatever. I think I look good.
God knows my kids think I look good! Its hard to remember our culture's body rules when my recently-weaned three-year-old is lovingly nuzzling my mama belly (his favorite part of me), my 8 year old thinks I smell best when I'm sweaty, and my 9 month old is forever made cheerful by the nourishment and snuggles he gets at the breast whenever, wherever.
BTW, in Washington the leg just voted to protect nursing in public! Yay. Let the nanas begin.
Breastfeeding should only be looked upon positively, there should be no laws against breastfeeding in public anywhere. It's a natural and amazing part of Motherhood and I will continue to do it anywhere I choose!!
