Best for Babes is doing an awesome job of helping to promote breastfeeding as the culturally acceptable way to feed babies...........something babies have always known was Best for Babes!

I came from a family who didn't do the "breastfeeding thing"...so it was a shock for alot of them when I chose to breastfeed both my children. I breastfed my daughter for 16 monts and my son for 18 months. I loved every moment! I have met up with a lot of opposition about public breastfeeding, as well as alot of young women who beleive the "myths" about breastfeeding. I would love to see women who breastfeed in public treated like formula feeding moms...not as if we're doing something "dirty".
Just heard that we're in the Feb/Mar issue of Fit Pregnancy, in the Bump-a-licious section! YAY!!
I would like to say that I recently moved to Minneapolis and have experienced absolutely no unwelcomeness to breastfeeding. The vast majority of new moms I have come in contact with have all breastfed their babies for at least the first few months if not longer. There is actually a mall near me with a number of mother baby rooms designed with breastfeeding in mind. It has really made my breastfeeding experience 100% positive. Nice job Minneapolis!

As a momma who has loved breastfeeding these past 16 months I am offended by the picture at the top of this page. Women are constantly objectified as sexual objects in the U.S. and we all struggle with insecurities because we don't look "like that." As a result the untold beauty, complexity and wisdom of our women, our mothers, is minimized and ignored. Breastfeeding is one of the best things we can do for our children and women are the only ones who can provide this gift. It is an example of woman as nurturer, provider, creator. But it is not a symbol of women's sexuality. Women are beautiful sexual creatures (arguably more attractive naked than men:) but that is only a piece of who we are. I am disappointed that this "cause" has employed this insidious form of oppression and discrimination in an effort to "make breastfeeding mainstream, celebrated and supported."
Breastfed my child for one year. I quit because I needed medication for my R.A. and fibromyalgia. I'm not one to flash people in public, but on an occasion Rori would fling off the cover and I would get dirty looks left and right. Even with my wrap around me people would flip out. As she got to be one everyone wanted to know when I would stop breastfeeding. I believe that breastfeeding is the best choice for a child, but bottle feeding has it's uses like my friend who never got her child to latch properly (without bleeding) despite a lot of help. I just don't want my daughter to feel like an outsider in society if she chooses to breast feed her children.
That's a very pretty picture. I think if women realized the beauty of the mothering body, they might not shy away from pregnancy and nursing. I remember in the months after DD's birth, I got really skinny but still had that beautiful pregnancy glow. I have a few amazing pictures from that time...you'd think they were photoshopped lol.
FYI, the picture of the woman breastfeeding naked is an actual mother breastfeeding HER OWN child and the photo is completely unretouched. Yes, it is unrealistic, but since breasts have been used to sell cars, kitchen tiles, toilet paper, you name it, we thought it was high time they were used to sell what they were made for!
I just want to say something. I am a breastfeeding mom and I take offense to the picture of the woman BF naked with a baby that is not her's.
I totally support BF and i wish everyone would do it but we need to be realistic here.
What about Babies of incarcerated Moms? They are denied this huge benefit because their Mama's made a mistake or two or four... and we are hell-bent on punishment instead of encouraging good behavior! SHEESH! We reward good mom's in the animal kingdom, "That lioness takes such good care of her cubs, nurses well..." etc. etc. but human babies don't need that to be healthy? Hogwash! Our culture must change if the family is to survive. Thank-you for this step in the right direction.
I am going to write my next law school article on this topic, so if anyone has any interesting articles on Pennsylvania breastfeeding legislation please share!
