To my friends, a relationship in progress:
The dividing line and the unity among friends
Another Saturday, Sunday, or any day at the border park a special group of friends have met again. Bonded under the spirit of unity and peace. To the strum of a guitar and the click of a camera footprints begin to cover the sandy stretch of beach. A line appears in the distance. While the friends say the line is only imaginary it has become more real in the midst of its physical construction.
As the friends approach their place they are quickly reminded of the dividing line. A fresh one has been drawn in the sand, far greater and devastating than its former. The friends continue toward the mesa, where not long ago they united with more friends. Now that mesa is a fort. But the friends persist, white flags in hand. Some are shoved, some taken captive, and others beaten back by the slogans of enforcement. The lines they had forgotten are real again. Be it the fort walls, its guards, or the symbolism of a divided friendship the line is deep, wide, and tall. It is real…
NO! My friends cry, it is only imaginary. And for this I thank each and every one of them. The fitness of their courage and strength in solidarity transcends all borders, politics, and divisions. The friends of friendship park remain, united not divided.
