Four Oscars, twelve nominations, a career that spanned sixty-two years - these are impressive numbers, extraordinary numbers, numbers the likes of which have never been seen. And yet these numbers are but the bones of the Hepburn legend. For her fans, Katharine Hepburn is so much more than a filmography or a list of credits. She reached through the screen, past the fourth wall, and touched the gist of our humanity, and that, as much as anything, is why we love her.

There was a place that helped form this humanity, shape this legend we love, a place Katharine loved almost as much as we love her. This place is Fenwick in the town of Old Saybrook and it was there that she would ultimately die.

So it is entirely fitting that it is Old Saybrook that will build the only theatre to bear her name, the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. More than a monument or a statute, it is an appropriate tribute and the ultimate expression of a decades-long love affair between a town and its most celebrated citizen.

And we can help make this tribute a reality. We can help create a living memorial to this extraordinary human being in the place she felt most human and serene. We can write a footnote, a postscript, to tuck in Old Saybrook's valentine. Resident or not, citizen or international fan, we can show our appreciation, our love, by making a contribution to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center.

The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center will touch hundreds of thousands of lives in the decades to come. Some of us will make contributions large enough to be permanently recognized on a plaque; some won't, but each and every contributor can bask in the satisfaction of knowing his or her gift helped make this lasting tribute to Katharine Hepburn possible while also bringing Old Saybrook a home for the performing arts.
