Without appropriate services to assist in the transition, the prospects that greet women upon release are often as grim as the ones they faced when they entered the criminal justice system. But with the right services, WPA has seen women take control of their lives, and succeed in their reentry. The societal investment in incarceration is expensive and even self-propagating (as high recidivism rates dictate), but it is acutely neglectful of women. WPA has spent almost 160 years addressing the needs of women in the criminal justice system - in prison and jail, and in the community - by offering an Alternative to Incarceration program, family reunification programs, and an array of reentry services. When a WPA client gains the tools she needs to succeed on the outside, it is not only her wellbeing that is improved, it is the wellbeing of her children, her family, and her community.
