Description:
Web sites will Go Pink during the month of October to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, get people talking about breast cancer, and raise money for research.

But to be clear, raising money isn't the primary purpose of this web event.

The hope is that you turn your site pink (in whatever way works for your site), go out to that World Wide Web thing and educate yourself about the multiple issues related to Breast Cancer, then take that newfound knowledge and tell someone else what you've learned.

My great-aunt, Pat Mayberry, died from breast cancer. In 2007, my cousin Kim (Aunt Pat’s daughter) had a double mastectomy due to breast cancer. Only months later, we found out my cousin Robbin also had breast cancer, which she received radiation and chemotherapy to treat. So when I heard a friend was walking in the 2007 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, I jumped at the chance to support a cause that could help my family…and so many others. I joined the Walk expecting to raise some money for a good cause, not realizing what an amazing journey it would be.

I didn’t think I could be more driven for this cause until I actually started walking those 40 miles in 2007. I went into that 40 mile walk thinking I was walking it alone – I was wrong!!! Within the first five miles I met a woman in her late-thirties who found a lump in her breast while breast feeding her newborn, who was an unexpected addition to the family. She told me about her sixteen year old daughter holding her while they both wept when she returned from the Johns’ Hopkins Cancer Beauty Spa….with no hair; how her daughter became the caregiver to her and how painful that was. Then miles later I met a man with a leg brace from his ankle to his thigh. I slowed my pace to talk him and find out why the hell he would walk 40 miles in such a conditio n. He told me about his sister who found out she had advanced stage breast cancer in her early thirties and then fought it tooth and nail for the nine months she lived after her diagnosis, and how walking 40 miles after knee surgery was nothing compared to how hard she fought to stay alive those nine months. Then my tent mate, Victoria, told me about her friend who was at home, fighting breast cancer, and how much it meant to her that Victoria was walking in her honor. I will never, ever forget these people - and all the others I haven’t mentioned. They are forever a part of me.

I left the walk in 2007 with tears in my eyes – tears of sadness because of the loss I was humbled to have strangers share with me, but also tears of triumph because of the stories of battles won and the knowledge that I might have helped another story turn out brighter.

So I’m doing it again!!!! I am walking 40 miles on May 2 and 3 as a participant in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer because because I have been forever impacted by this terribly prevalent disease. I have committed to walking 40 miles and to raising $1800 for breast cancer treatment and research.

This is a very tough time to ask anyone for any sort of financial contribution…and trust me, I understand that!!! Instead of just asking for donations, I am asking for my friends and family to attend a Comedy Night at the Comedy Factory in Baltimore on Friday April 17, 2009 at 7pm. It is only $15 a person and all proceeds will benefit the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The Comedy Factory has arranged for this event for the benefit of my walk in particular. I obviously hope that you can make it to the event. If you cannot, I understand, but do ask that you forward this to those you know that might be interested. I am committed to this cause and really hope to sell all 130 tickets the Comedy Factory has offered me to help me reach my goal.

Thank you all so much for supporting me and everyone this money will help!!! PLEASE PASS THIS E-MAIL ON TO OTHERS WHO MAY BE INTERESTED!!!

If you would like to purchase tickets, please e-mail me at rscott@lrsfederal.com or call me at 443-676-0097. I will be wearing a pink boa outside of the Comedy Factory (32 Light Street, Baltimore – above Burke’s Restaurant) at 6:30 the night of the show…April 17. I will happily deliver tickets or you can reserve your tickets and get them from me the night of the show. Please help me help boobies!!!

If you would like to make a donation, you can do so by going to www.avonwalk.org and searching for Walker - Robyn Scott.
