Do 1 Thing is a collaborative nationwide effort between photographers and journalists that raises awareness of homeless teenagers and encourages individuals to do one thing to assist them on Valentine’s Day 2009.
The project will spread virally utilizing social networking sites, wikis, blogs and a dynamic web site, providing an intimate connection between need and activism.
More than 1.3 million youth in America are homeless today. Already three out of every ten homeless adults admit to a history of foster and with 25,000 foster youth aging out each year, the next wave of homeless in America may very well be former foster children who were never adopted.
On the day when Americans spend more than 14 billion dollars telling each other how much they care, Do 1 Thing will send out a call to action asking individuals to do one thing of their choice to help these vulnerable youth.
In that single 24-hour period, the public will be committed to activism, while the Do 1 Thing photographers and writers will fan out across the country recording real homeless youth. This content will be uploaded throughout the day, documenting our efforts.
Do1Thing has teamed up with Covenant House, the largest non-profit helping homeless teens in the Americas and Stand Up for Kids, a nation-wide core of volunteers reaching homeless teens on the streets.
Their doors will be open in more than 100 cities across the country accepting and documenting donations.
