Decriminalization Makes Cents is a resident developed and led campaign to reduce Connecticut’s budget deficit while generating new income. Connecticut residents developed this strategy to save the state nearly$25 million a year by reducing the cost of the criminal justice system through the decriminalization of marijuana. Here’s how:
1. Collect fines from low-level marijuana possessors.
2. Remove nonviolent people from the criminal justice system.
3. Treatment and education cost less than incarceration.
Currently the Governor of Connecticut is collecting bottles to redeem for nickels to defeat the deficit. The Governor also asked state agencies to cut their budgets. We know what this leads to:
1. Reduced social and public services.
2. Immediate community consequences on politically vulnerable communities.
3. Higher taxes!!!
These changes will create immediate savings and generate new streams of revenue. These savings will reduce the deficit and create funds for expanded education, healthcare, transportation, youth programs, prescription drug assistance for seniors, and continue to reduce racial disparities in Connecticut’s prison system.
1. Drug addiction is not a crime.
2. Fund public education and treatment
3. Restore poor communities.
4. Reduce prison population
5. Prison is for violent offenders.
