With less than two months to go until 2010, there are still many issues and events that require our attention before the end of the year.
To start, International Volunteer Day is fast approaching on 5 December 2009. The work of volunteers have a major impact on civil society and we’d like to you’re your thoughts. Please send articles or commentary on the theme of volunteering to editor at civicus.org by 3 December 2009 for inclusion in our special e-civicus edition.
Shortly after this day, the world’s attention will be on Copenhagen for the UN Climate Change Conference from 7-18 December. Failure is not an option for the long term survival of our world. What are your views on this important issue? Let us know by emailing your articles and commentary to editor at civicus.org. Also check out this week’s poll question and help CIVICUS develop its message for this key conference.
Finally, climate change can also impact on people’s basic human rights. Occurring right in the middle of the Copenhagen conference, International Human Rights Day, on 10 December, gives us a chance to consider just what it takes to ensure Human Rights for All. e-CIVICUS will have a special issue to mark this day. Please send your articles to editor at civicus.org by 8 December
Special Issue on International Volunteer Day (5 December 2009)
CIVICUS participated in the Consultative Meeting on International Year of the Volunteers + 10 held at the United Nations Volunteers’ headquarter in Bonn, Germany, during 22-23 October 2009. A group of over 40 participants from different organisations, including volunteer sending organisations and NGOs, met and drew up an action plan leading up to the campaign year in 2011. CIVICUS was involved in the drafting of the Communications and Promotions Plan. Civil society is a target audience for the campaign and CIVICUS will work with its Members and partners to encourage volunteerism and support for this campaign. To start with, the first issue of e-CIVICUS in December would be dedicated to celebrating International Volunteer Day (which falls on 5 December). Articles on the theme of volunteering, especially those that show the work of volunteers and their impact on civil society, should be sent to editor at civicus.org by 3 December 2009
CIVICUS Crisis Response Fund alerts you about a crisis for one of our partners in Eithiopia: Organization for Social Justice – Ethiopia (OSJE) has been a prominent, steadfast voice from civil society since 2003 and a key partner on CIVICUS programs for several years. Despite every effort of OSJE and other local organizations and advocates, a new Ethiopian law will drastically limit the civil society space by prohibiting any human rights, democracy, governance, or advocacy organizations from receiving more than 10 per cent funding from international supporters after February 2010. Emergency financial support is therefore urgently needed to sustain OSJE before this narrow window of opportunity slams shut. For more information about this please emil adam.nord at civicus.org
