THE State Government has admitted it rushed through legislation to give timber company Gunns an extra two years before it has to start work on its $2billion pulp mill.

Resources Minister David Llewellyn admitted yesterday the Pulp Mill Clarification Bill introduced into Parliament on Tuesday was approved by Cabinet only last Monday and had been rushed through normal government processes.

BREAKING NEWS: From The Tarkine National Coalition

THE TASMANIAN GOVERNMENT HAS LODGED THE TARKINE ROAD PROJECT WITH THE COMMONWEALTH FOR ASSESSMENT UNDER THE ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION ACT 1999.

This project will clearly compromise the last refuge of disease free Tasmanian devils in the wild. 70% of Tasmania's Devils have perished to this highly contagious and always fatal Devil facial tumor disease.

This single act of ecological vandalism may condemn the iconic Tasmanian devil to extinction in the wild.

"Impact on the Tasmanian devil is considered to be potentially significant for the following reasons:

- There is considerable potential for increased roadkill rates following completion of the road.

- Animals with large movement ranges, low reproductive rates and low natural densities (such as devils) tend to be negatively affected by roads and traffic (Fahrig and Rytwinski 2009).

- The increase in Arthur River crossing sites may lead to the spread of DFTD (Devil facial tumor disease) into new areas south of the Arthur River. "

Excerpt from the Tasmanian Government's Tarkine Road EPBC referral lodged 28 October 2009

The public now has until 12 November to make public comment!

Please download our guide to making public comment submissions at www.tarkine.org (follow the links)

The full referral document and attached reports can be downloaded here: http://www.environment.gov.au/cg...

Please consider making a submission. Submissions can be emailed, and even just to cut and paste a few paragraphs from our submission guide shows Minister Garrett your support for the Tarkine and the future of the Tasmanian devil.

Now is a crucial time!

Please forward this to all your networks, and encourage all your contacts to join the "Save the Tarkine" facebook group to show their support in this now urgent fight.

Hey everyone,

the protests at Beaconsfield went really well. Thank you to all that came. TAP put on a great alternative forum with lots of noise and attention, and Pulp The Mill showed that people are ready to go to the next step to show oppoition to the mill, putting themselves on the line.

I was proudly one of the 21 people who held a silent vigil calling for a royal commission into the corruption that clouds this mill and I thank you for your support in this.

for more info about us, or how you can help, please visit www.pulpthemill.org

thank you

Michael Tavares

Legal action is virtually useless
PETER WHISH-WILSON
You are all on the money. Basically, if the mill is operating within its permit guidelines or regulations, and those guidelines or regulations as they currently stand don’t properly protect the rights of citizens in the mill vacinity or businesses etc (which is my strong view), legal action is virtualy useless.

STEPHANI TAYLOR
In reply to #7, don’t expect the media to coming running in to report on the inadequecies of Section 11. All through our court preceding, which took almost a year from initial letters to pollies and then being overturned by the supreme court, there was very little coverage by the media. A tiny paragraph in the “Gunns Gazette” (Examiner) a couple of small articles in the Mercury, tiny snippets on ABC news and a bit of coverage on Stateline at the begining. There may have been more that slipped under my radar, but my main point is that the whole event has hardly been touched by those media which usually like to dig deep into politics. I think they are either afraid of the implications of probing into the PMAA, especially Section 11, or have been heavied to keep their mouths shut and not cause waves.
