A massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Japan on Friday March 11, triggering a deadly tsunami and widespread devastation. The main quake was the largest to hit Japan in a hundred years and sent a wall of water inland across Japan's northeast coastline, devastating entire cities and triggering multiple nuclear crises. The New York Times reports that as of Monday March 14, "the disaster has left more than 10,000 people dead, many thousands homeless and millions without water, power, heat or transportation." Though the full extent of the damage will not be known for some time we know that it will be large and Japan will need international support to rebuild.
A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) is en route to Japan now.
We are also responding to disasters in Bolivia, Madagascar and New Zealand. It’s because of your support of ShelterBox that we can respond quickly to disasters like these without having to wait for funding. As you know, we cannot accept location-specific donations, but we rely on your support to prepare for the next inevitable disasters—to send aid to disaster survivors around the world.
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support!
