Did you know today is World Water Day? In honor of this day, designated by the United Nations in 1992, here are some tips that you can adopt to do your part in living the Thirst Aid Live mission of living responsibly locally, raising awareness nationally, and giving globally.
In the U.S. alone we waste about a TRILLION gallons of water yearly through dripping faucets, running toilets, and other leaks according to the EPA. By fixing leaks, households can lower their water bills by more than 10%, says the Environmental Protection Agency.
How much is that per family? About 10,000 gallons, enough to fill a backyard swimming pool.
How can you detect a leaking toilet? Place a drop of food coloring in the tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within 15 minutes without flushing, you have a leak. EPA says fixing these household leaks can lower water bills by more than 10%.
There are other ways to conserve water, too. If you're building or renovating a house, you'll save by installing tankless water heaters, low-flow plumbing fixtures, dual-flush toilets and -- as a recent post discussed -- rain barrels or cisterns.
YOU CAN DO LITTLE THINGS FOR FREEEEEE that will help the environment and save you more money in the end.
1. If you wash dishes by hand, and not a dishwasher, just turn the water off while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.
2. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and save 25 gallons a month. If you turn it off while washing your hair, you'll save up to 150 gallons a month.
3. When running a bath, plug the tub before turning the water on, then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up.
