Rodeo has become utterly detached from authentic ranching practices, rendering it irrelevant to Western culture and history. Unlike "life on the ranch", rodeo has developed irrelevant games that value speed and aggressive competition. Consequently, there is usually little to no sense of animal welfare.
Among the mild to severe abuse that "wild horses", grown cattle (bucking bulls), and other livestock receive, timed roping of young calves and steer remains the most abusive sport within the rodeo.
