Lent, Day 40

A New Song
By now you have an extra $40 that would have disappeared into things yesterday that you don’t even remember today. Mostly it would have been spent on consumption. But instead of “ingesting” our money, we’ve ingested the words of God this season. Instead of carrying on throughout our normal days, we’ve brought sacrifice into the routine of our lives. What would it look like to keep going? I know...many of you are counting down the days, maybe the hours, until you can watch that movie or sip that soda. But really, what if we lived in a way that we could liberate another...every 40 days.
That is the spirit of Lent. Not a vain pursuit of piety for a short period of time, but a time of focus that changes our lives so that we can change the lives of others...long term.
You have been singing a new song. It takes time to learn, to get he melody just right, to learn the rhythm and movement, but by now...you’ve got it. So take some time to reflect over the past 40 days and ask yourself a question. Do I really miss the old song I was singing?
Obviously it’s not Easter. We have decided to hold our fast through the Sundays of Lent to conclude it before Spring Break. We may not be posting every day until Easter, but we will be turning our focus on the pandemic that you have given yourself to over the past 40 days. Our prayer is that it becomes a part of the new song that you are singing--one that proclaims justice to the poor. You may become the answer to someone else’s prayer.
