I love the work the WPT does. I worked with the Kakapo for 2 years and enjoyed getting their magazine. I have just come to the UK from working with the Kakapo. I won't be donating to the WPT sorry but I am trying to support the Kakapo in my own way. I have made some greeting cards that are avaliable at ETSY.
Purefocus.etsy.com . Let me know you are from the WPT and I'll throw in an extra card to the batches of 6. Half the profit is going to the Kakapo recovery programme. Thanks.
Updated: The cause has raised $1,000.

Such an exciting cause! The aviculture industry in Victoria is completely without and i have missed having a yard full of birds. Cant wait to get to a warmer climate and get back into it! Are there any other aussies here?

Last year, I "rescued" an African Grey from the avian vet I volunteered for. The vet is also a breeder, and had aquired this bird several years ago. He was wild caught and brought into the USA before 1992 when importing became illegal. I've never agreed with breeders because the birds are sentenced to a life in a cage, with a mate and rarely get out to see sunshine, or have a breath of fresh air.
This grey was named "Wild Willie" because he had not been socialized, and would scream loudly, and rum all around his cage if you even looked at him. His mate died and WW was slated to live in the "Grey's Room" where there was sunlight, but hardly any social action with humans except at feeding time. I asked the vet if I could foster him and she agreed, saying that he would never calm down and would always be extemely agitated.
I brought him home and immediately re-named him "Alex" after Dr. Pepperberg's Alex.
Seven months later, Alex is stick trained, and accepts treats from my hand. His cage door is ALWAYS open, and he has the run of the house. He usually just stays on his day-perch, and sleeps in my room in his open cage at night. He's a lot calmer, and only growls occasionally. I am working on getting him to "step-up" to my hand, and it may take another 6 or 7 months or longer. It's Okay because I want to make up for the cruel people who took him from the wild, and also the first years here being kept in a cage. I'm devoting all the time it takes to make his life as high-quality as possible.

The next few months are always our worst here at Belize Bird Rescue. We will be inundated with damaged, injured, and stressed baby parrots that are discarded by the nest robbers. We will also be working long hours taking care of the multitude of baby parrots that are donated to us by the 'had to buy the little chick or it might have died' brigade.
The facts are that just one lttle squab will sell for several months wages will perpetuate this trade. It is painful to say, but it is better that these parrots die rather than get bought and condemn hundreds of others to this abuse.
Please do not ever buy a wild caught bird. For every health one you see there are scores of broken, starving, ill treated others that you will never know about, and your purchase will only make things worse.
Stop the trade in wild caught parrots

I am involved with a great company called JavaFit that has just introduced a new fundraising program for non-profit organizations. The program is called "JavaFit Gives Back". I have a great passion for animals and I'm looking for organizations needing to raise money for their respective causes. "JavaFit Gives Back" is the brainchild of the Javalution Coffee Company, a six year old, publicly-traded coffee company based in Florida. The fundraising program gives your organization the ability to raise residual income through the sale of "Functional Coffee". The coffee has four different functions - Energy, Diet, Focus and Immune as well as a Gourmet blend. Around December 1st, Java Fit is also introducing an Organic coffee, a Whole-Bean Coffee and a Decaf Coffee (made with a Swiss waterbath process so NO formaldahyde!) JavaFit also has four "Functional Lattes" in Energy, Diet, Focus and Immune for latte lovers, as well as a single serve teabag type functional coffee coming out soon! If you have a desire to raise an ongoing residual income for your non-profit organization through "JavaFit Gives Back", please email me at slaterk81@nycap.rr.com . I welcome any and all inquiries. Your organization can profit beyond belief with this program. We have some churches in the Dallas area already taking advantage of the program. It doesn't cost anything for your organization to get involved - nothing to purchase upfront or ever, and your customers can join for free too! You owe it to your animal friends to check this out...you'll be glad you did!
