Petition: Ban Fracking Now

To: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo

I call on the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, to permanently ban the practice of fracking for gas as unsafe for clean water, air, and a liveable climate.

I call on the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, to permanently ban the practice of fracking for gas as unsafe for clean water, air, and a liveable climate.

Fracturing bedrock for gas is an inherently dirty and unsafe technology. Cement and pipes at these great depths and pressures leak, as the industry's own documents show. Water laden with toxic chemicals poisons drinking water. Powerful methane leaks and warms our climate. Radiation underground is released and risks human and animal health. Pastoral rural areas are turned into brownfields. No amount of regulation can prevent this, nor can cement or pipes be repaired thousands of feet under the earth.

Instead, New York should lead the nation and become the Clean Energy State. Far more jobs can be created by insulating every building and installing modern insulating windows. These jobs pay for themselves with the energy cost savings, and save far more energy than fracking will produce. New York should also greatly expand affordable solar and wind power.

Furthermore, we submit this as an official public comment on the revised regulations proposed by the Department of Environmental Conservation on High Volume Hydraulic Fracturing. The proposed regulations will not protect our air, our water, our land, or our health from the hazards of fracking. We call upon the Department to withdraw the regulations and ban fracking in New York.

Lastly, we call on the Governor to give his Health Commissioner at least another year to conduct a truly thorough and credible study of fracking's impact on human health. Rushing this study will expose it as politics, not science.

Governor Cuomo, Don't Frack New York!

Right now, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is considering lifting a temporary ban on fracking in New York. Lifting this temporary ban would threaten communities' health, pollute vital water sources, open up peoples' lands to gas exploration, and speed up global climate change. Communities across the country are watching to see if the Governor will stand with communities calling for a healthy environment or an industry determined to exploit New York's gas fields. What happens in New York is critical to the nationwide fight against fracking.

Realizing the fight New York's communities face, Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon started the Artists Against Fracking campaign, which has organized over nearly 200 of the world's biggest artists, musicians and filmmakers to raise public awareness about fracking to new levels. Now we're taking public awareness and turning it into public action to get fracking banned, starting in New York!

What is Fracking?
Hydraulic fracturing, also known as "fracking", is a new method of extracting natural gas and oil from rocks at depths from 2,000 to 10,000 feet. First, deep wells are drilled straight down through the aquifer. This drilling then curves horizontally below the earth's surface and into its shale rock formations. Next, millions of gallons of water laced with chemicals is injected at extremely high pressure into these rock formations, breaking apart the rock and freeing trapped methane along with other dangerous materials.

There are more than 27,000 wells in the US and each well uses 1-8 million gallons of water and 80-300 tons of chemicals each time it's fracked (wells can be fracked up to 8 times). However, only 4 states of the 31 that have major fracking projects have robust drilling rules in place. The fracking industry remains exempt from Clean Water, Safe Drinking Water and Clean Air Acts, hazardous waste disposal and other federal regulations.

Why New York?
New York, a bellwether state for natural gas development, is home to the marcellus shale, the type of rock formation that holds large reserves in natural gas. Many states with natural gas reserves are watching New York's decision on whether to lift the temporary ban. Lifting the ban instead of making it permanent would likely usher in a new era of gas drilling across the country. New York Governor Cuomo's decision on fracking will define his administration's clean energy policy. Let's help him make the right choice and turn New York into a clean energy state!

Being halfway to our goal of 50,000 we wanted to take a moment to recognize all of the incredible artists in our movement and announce that we have launched an innovative new contest asking you to create a video making the case to ban fracking in New York.

Artists Against Fracking wants to show Governor Cuomo our opposition to fracking in the most compelling and moving way possible. The winner of the video contest will not only win lunch with the founders of Artists Against Fracking, Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon, but they will also have their video broadcast as a TV ad in New York City and Albany. Here are the details:

    The Rules
We're looking for two types of videos: a 30-second TV ad and a short video. The 30-second TV ad should be directed at the Governor. The short video should focus on educating people about the hazards of fracking and be no more than three minutes long.

Aside from the length limits, we aren't putting any restrictions on your video submissions. You may enter work in either one or both categories. Show us your creativity!

All videos should be submitted by Wednesday, January 30th.

    The Prize
Artists Against Fracking founders Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon will judge the submissions and choose one winner from each category. The creators of the winning videos will get to have lunch with the two celebrity judges in New York City.

We need voices calling to ban fracking NOW more than ever.

Last week The New York Times obtained an analysis from the State Health Department that claims fracking can be done safely. Though the Health Department has distanced itself from the analysis, saying it is outdated and will require substantial changes, it is an ominous indication of the State's leaning on the issue. It's clear that now is a critical time to tell Governor Cuomo: Don't Frack New York! Only public pressure will convince Governor Cuomo to permanently ban fracking, setting the tone for other Governors across the country.

Please spread this petition far and wide, and we will deliver your comment to the Governor and Department of Environmntal Conservation on January 11th!

    Happy Holidays,

I wanted to take a moment to personally thank you for joining the Artists Against Fracking campaign. I can hardly believe the momentum you've helped create in opposition to fracking in New York and across the country. The work being done is a true inspiration.

If you haven't added your voice to the petition to ban fracking please join us, your voice is important.

Thinking about this year, my thoughts drift back to when John (Lennon) and I first bought our farm in Delaware County, New York. Tucked away in the Catskill mountains, we were a part of a tight-knit community surrounded by pristine rivers and beautiful wildness. Now this community, and hundreds just like it, are threatened as Governor Cuomo considers lifting New York's moratorium on fracking.

This year has been critical to raising awareness about fracking as a dirty, dangerous energy. Now we need to act! 2013 is about taking that awareness and turning it into action. I don't want fracking in my community; I don't want fracking in ANY community. Next year is going to be a very  important turning point for us.

The first two weeks of 2013 are critical. By signing and sharing the petition now, your voice will have 2x the power. Not only will your petition be delivered to Governor Cuomo in February, but it will also be delivered to the Department of Environmental Conservation on Jan 11 as an official comment opposing fracking. We want to break the record for official comments and we'll need your help. You can do this by signing the petition and then sharing the petition with your friends and family.

Sean and I wish you a very happy holiday.

  4. Update #3

    Posted on Dec 21, 2012

Thanks to your support over 30,000 people have joined the Artist Against Fracking, and nearly 12,000 have signed the petition to ban fracking. This is a great start and gives us all some important momentum going into the holiday season. Remember, signing the petition right now packs 2x the punch. Not only will it be delivered to Governor Cuomo in February, it will also be hand delivered as a public comment in opposition to fracking on January 11.

We also wanted to share a great interview Sean Lennon gave last night on fracking. Sean was on "The Big Picture" last night speaking about the dangers of fracking and why natural gas is NOT a clean energy solution. Great interview Sean!

Be sure to continue to share the petition to ban fracking with your community. Thanks for you continued work for a clean energy future.

Cigarettes are good for you, and so is fracking.

...Well that's what they would like us to think

You might be wondering why are we talking about cigarettes and fracking? The connections between the two might surprise you.

You might be wondering why are we talking about cigarettes and fracking? The connections between the two might surprise you.

In 2009 The American Natural Gas Association hired the PR firm Hill & Knowlton, the same consultancy group that tobacco companies hired to dispel "rumors" that tobacco was causing lung cancer. Since then the Natural Gas Association has spent $80 million on Hill & Knowlton's public relations spin to convince the nation that fracking does not harm the environment, impact our health, or speed up climate change.

The Natural Gas Association is hiding behind this misinformation and it's putting communities at risk yet again. Sign the Petition to Ban Fracking.

    Fracking contamintes drinking water:
EPA released a report showing that fracking had contaminated groundwater in Wyoming because fracking wells leaked. This contamination isn't a surprise since a single fracking well can use up to 80-300 tons of chemicals.

Fracking pollutes the air we breathe:

Multiple studies have found higher rates of air pollutants that cause respiratory and neurological problems in areas where fracking wells exist. Not even school zones are safe from fracking.

    Fracking speeds up climate change:
A recent Cornell University study concluded that natural gas produced by fracking contributes to climate change at least as much as coal does.

The facts speak louder than spin and just like there is no safe cigarette, there is no safe fracking. We need new, clean energy, not yesterday's dirty energy. Don't let your friends fall for the fracking industry's misinformation; invite them to sign the petition telling Governor Cuomo to ban fracking in New York.

You can join the calls for Gov. Cuomo to "Imagine There's No Fracking" by signing and spreading the petition urging him to ban fracking in New York.

"No amount of regulation can ever make fracking safe," the ad reads. "No one can be sent thousands of feet under the earth to make repairs once the cement fails – and it will. The enormous pressure and temperature changes at those depths guarantee it." The ad continues, "Fracked gas is not climate friendly. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that leaks from the failed wells, fractured rock and pipelines…. New York can become the Clean Energy Empire State. With an economy bolstered by insulating all buildings. This way we could save far more energy and create FAR more jobs than fracking, plus save consumers money forever. And let's scale up solar and wind power with a smart grid for truly clean, economical energy."

It is appallingly apathetic that this petition was started over 30 days ago and only 43 people have signed on! Isn't anyone reposting this? Come on! Just what heinous tragedy has to occur before people will start worrying more about the devastating ecological threats being jammed down our throats than being "politically correct" with the people in our lives!

Maybe people are scared ,Here in Australia Coal Seam gas is being heralded by politicians as the great job creator and ecconomic boom. The corporations involved want more money now and fouling our drinking water forever and destroying arible land is just "collateral damage"(heard that before)

Unproven technology + profit seeking = environmental catastrophe + health disaster.

? People? wanting to fracture the very bedrock of the earth for gas and petroleum are destabilising the mantle of the planet upon which one all must take a stand and one day be interred. It is akin to fracturing one's patella to extrude the underlying senovial fluid. Good luck making any progress on that leg hereto fore.

Your pseudoscience was dreamed up in someones small brain who doesn't understand geology and earth science . . . probably some attorney who is out of work . . .

We live in Africa and know how one "person" can destroy a whole country....we see the writing on the wall for the USA, so wake up and take action... you are in danger.

Come on Govenor Cuomo--More Destabilizing our enviroinment --MORE GREED! Haven't we seen enough of what happens when these factors take over?

Again, Right way, you are an ass, many of us wish life was reduced back to a tribal society, I for one welcome the next ice age, we need a reduction of human life, we are 7 billion people over the natural limit of being sustainable. And not all of us buy into the rhetoric of disposable e-waste, soem of us keep the same phone for years, dont buy bottled water, and do everything we can to reuse and reduce.......Ii bet your dumbass buys liquids in plastic containers don't you? Furthermore, if you weren't such a coward, you would use your real name and your face, I am an environmental scientist and historian, and i put myself out there for all to see. I am trying to buy a shotgun myself, but you are literally hiding behind a handgun.

I am also quite sure the "Universit of Hard Knocks" means you are uneducated and blindly vote for every republican and believe in every word the bible states, like a fucking sheep raped in the ass by my Scottish cock......

Why do my comments keep disappearing? I'm not rude, just direct & maybe argue the point more than most. What's wrong with that?

Fracking is freaking, leaking, greeding gone bad enemy of water- water for life not gas for profit!

Right Way : it was this way in the USA before the FIRST NATION'S GENOCIDE. if people insist on staying on stolen land by way of genocide they should at least respect it better and not everything should be allowed for profit.... just because some things are for profit. or even murder for hire should be just fine since hey....people make a profit off of clothing and apples....WTF ?? i'm not upset with you at all: and wish you nothing but good things in life and peace...but your way of expressing your feelings towards david was bullying: it's not your opinion that is an issue but how you make your point. you're likely a great guy / woman...i'm not sure of your gender from your name so forgive me: i'm sure your a fine person and nicer than your last sentence. peace.

Come to our senses, humans. More energy than we need is available from sun, sea, air & if more is needed, from geo thermal drilling (safer than fracking) We only need to develop harvesting these & it's much cleaner & eases the unemployment figures very effectively. Then we'd grow plenty of veg oil to grease the wheels of industry. I have no children & am in old age, why should I care? For your grandchildren, that's why. Let's get real, people!

NY -you are the copy pattern for most of the world metropolises! Stop prehistorical parasitizing on fossils - drilling its a dead-end practice! Go for sustainable energy - this is the only acceptable future for all of us!
