Blacktown City Council PLEASE rethink your Independent Temperament testing policy at Blacktown Pound!

We the undersigned request that Council rethink the new Independent Temperament testing policy following the recent March 15th incident at its Animal Holding Facility (AHF) at Blacktown, where the sad and tragic deaths of five (5) innocent dogs who had rescue holds occurred.

Dignity, Marlon, Zorro, Ronan and Clint did NOT deserve to die.

An Independent Provider assessed the five dogs that were KILLED and deemed them to not be suitable for rehoming due to aggression issues.

We would like to know just WHO this Independent Provider is, and just what qualifications they hold.

To be fair - Temperament testing should always be done outside of the shelter, in a less stressful environment for the animal!

Pounds are scary, noisy places for the animals, and to assess them in this environment is just not fair.

Councillors are you aware that it is illegal to kill dogs when there are alternatives:
What protective measures are in place to prevent the killing by law? No matter how an animal (or dog in this case) ends up in a council pound, subsections 64(5) and 64A(2) of the Companion Animals Act 1998 (NSW) stipulate that it is the DUTY of the council concerned to consider whether there is an ALTERNATIVE action to that of destroying the animal and if practicable to adopt any such alternative. It is NSW state law to choose rehoming of these dogs.

We want to encourage Blacktown Council to employ a qualified Behaviourist or Behavioural Trainer to manage and oversee the training and assessment programs put in place for the animals at the Pound.

Lead the way and rethink your recent stupid decision Councillors.

Start now by working towards giving the animals at your Pound a chance to be rehomed.

Work in harmony alongside the Animal rescue groups and make Blacktown Pound a role model for other Pounds to follow.

Sincerely..

After hours last Friday the 15th of March, Blacktown Pound staff KILLED 5 innocent dogs before their time was up.

Their names were.. Dignity, Marlon, Zorro, Ronan and Clint.

These five dogs had adoption/rescue offers.

Not one of these rescues were told these dogs would be killed earlier than what was originally stated to them as being March 17th.

Blacktown Pound needs to change NOW.

These dogs did NOT deserve to die on March 15th.

How is it the first implemented program of the Animal Rehoming Officer to kill 5 out of 7 dogs on the kill list?

The AWL ( Animal Welfare League) uses that temperament test to help rehabilitate dogs now, 20 years ago they used these temperament tests just to kill dogs. Blacktown pound can NOT ignore rehabilitation and just kill. Nearly 2 years of no kill rate for dogs blown away by the one person (the Animal Rehoming Officer) who was meant to save them.  We can't just stand by and watch while Blacktown pound turns into another RSPCA type killing field?

We believe that animals being put to their death for no real apparent reason is unethical and cruel.

These animals had foster carers lined up and Blacktown pound advised their time would be up on Sunday March 17th yet they killed them days prior to this.

Blacktown pound knows very well that rescues come forth on Saturday and bail out these animals, yet they still killed them.

It is just NOT acceptable.

Last time a news article was published about the pound standing by their decision to kill the dogs after temperament testing - it was hijacked by not only poundrounds haters but also breeders and their cohort from a pure breeder forum - this resulted in the managers at the council getting the message 'everyone' supporting the killing. PLEASE comment favourably about the CESSATION of killing based on temperament and the fact the deputy mayor has said he is in support of our movement to hold council answerable - it's really important guys - when I met with Peter and Richard Smith they basically started the meeting by saying 'we don't care what you say because everyone supported us'.
