Governor Martinez, you have the power to prevent horse slaughter in the United States. At this pivotal moment, we urge you to make an executive order that would stop the horse slaughtering operation that is scheduled to open in New Mexico this April. The slaughterhouse, Valley Meat Co. is currently under investigation for animal cruelty and should not be allowed to enter the international horsemeat market.

Horse slaughter was banned in 2006 and should not be reenacted. If this operation opens in New Mexico it will set a precedent for slaughterhouses to open in other areas of the country resulting in hundreds of thousands of horse deaths per year. The U.S. should not participate in the production of horsemeat for international sale.

We urge you to ban the formation of horse slaughtering operations in New Mexico now.

The U.S. banned horse-slaughtering operations in 2006. However, that year three slaughterhouses in the U.S. were responsible for killing 104,899 horses. [1]

An employee at the Valley Meat Co. was recently caught on video insulting animal rights activists before shooting a horse in the head with a rifle. This type of operation should not be trusted to treat any kind of animal humanely.

There is not a market for horse slaughter in the U.S. because theses animals are seen as prestigious and elegant animals within our culture. Animal – rights activists brought upon the 2006 ban, and we will not stop until we are sure that American horses are protected. Please support these efforts by signing the petition!

Let's keep this up!! When horse slaughter comes to your state and you want help in stopping it - I can promise you will have the most experienced people helping you!!

if the governor of new jersey, chris Christie, can sign a law to ban horse slaughter..so can ms. Martinez! he also banned the use of new jersey roads for the transport of horses to slaughter! bruce springsteen's daughter was crucial in convincing mr. Christie to sign! we need her help!

Donations for these " Retirement Homes" to help the horses that are saved from slaughter are much in demand so easy to sign a petition but put money where mouth is so to speak and help the retirement farms and rescue missions as well.

the problem stems with people like me...we dont have the means or the money...i dont have a high paying job and live paycheck to paycheck...i havent bought new underwear in five years...at least people are doing the best they can to help save the horses by raising their voices...i signed and shared and maybe it will go to someone who can afford to donate money

Although Ms Martinez is not my governor, I hope she will consider that we don't want this happening in our country, in our world. Let's not have it in NM.

We are making a difference. Let us save our horses and let them roam free again on our ranges as they were intended to do. We must save them. This is up to us to save them. Ban horse slaughter forever. Horses are NOT FOOD, NEVER.

Nancy Henry

Yes, not food, never ever, like ever!

According to the Federal Humane Slaughter Act, animals should be stunned into unconsciousness prior to their slaughter to ensure a death with NO suffering than in killing methods used earlier. According to the Federal Humane Slaughter Act, animals should be stunned into unconsciousness prior to their slaughter to ensure a death with NO suffering than in killing methods used earlier. The most common methods are electrocution and CO2 stunning for swine and A SINGLE SHOT from a captive bolt stunning for cattle, sheep, horses, mules and goats. Frequent on-site monitoring is necessary, as is the employment of SKILLED and WELL TRAINED personnel. An animal is considered properly stunned when there is no "righting reflex"; that is, the animal must not try to stand up and right itself or makes any noise or sounds which indicate the animal is in a panic state, in pain or distress. Only then can it be considered fully unconscious. It can then proceed down the line, where slaughterhouse workers commence in cutting up its body."

It is this very law that is grossly violated by all commercial horse slaughter houses involving use of the captive-bolt pneumatic gun that can be seen in the many videos posted on YouTube titled "Canadian Horse Slaughter" and was also violated here in ALL U.S. horse slaughterhouses prior to 2007 which was well documented by the USDA inspectors.

This happens especially when the slaughter of wild, untrained or under-trained horses are observed, this method of "stunning" is highly ineffective, requiring multiple shots applied to the same equine in CLEAR VIOLATION of Federal Law. It is extremely difficult to effect a clean shot even with a domestic, fully-trained and calm horse. This is because the position of the brain in their skulls making the angle and trajectory needed to be effective very difficult to achieve on a fight or flight animal whose neck can NOT be restrained. This is very important to point out because Valley Meats has never stunned an equine, EVER. They are completely speculatory in all of their representations. They are claiming to know what they are doing, but according to many years of observation of failed shots ineffective at rendering equines "senseless" we know that even a large majority of well-trained, calm, domestic horses regain consciousness and virtually ALL wild, untrained or under-trained horses require multiple shots, in direct violation of Federal Law, and are conscious and alive during their own vivisection. Skulls recovered from previous U.S. horse slaughter plants as well as in Canada, have shown 3-11 holes in almost every horse skull and in some instances up to 22 holes were found.

Valley Meats used to slaughter cattle but was shut down permanately in March 2012 by the USDA for numberous violations to this law as well as failing to properly dispose of the remains of animal carcasses. The employees couldn't humanely slaughter cattle, what makes anyone believe they will humanely slaughter horses, a fight or flight animal, using only the methods allowed by the Federal Law????

On the backs of horses this country was built, and in front of plows they fed us. We do not eat HORSE in the USA and we shouldn't be slaughtering or exporting any of these majestic creatures in this country. It's barbaric!

What's the name of the person who shot the horse. Or address.

Nancy Henry
