What Schmucks! Santa Cruz Organic Might Contain GMOs?
- Posted to Say NO to MONSANTO by Alexis Baden-Mayer
To: Smucker's, R.W. Knudsen and Santa Cruz Organics
Until Smucker's and its organic brands, R.W. Knudsen and Santa Cruz Organics, support state GMO labeling campaigns and discontinue all financial support for anti-labeling efforts, you will not receive a dime from my family.
Shame on Smucker's for claiming to be a family-oriented company, while...

That Santa Cruz Organic© applesauce and peanut butter you're feeding your kids? Although by law, they can't contain genetically engineered ingredients, they might contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), according to a Santa Cruz customer service representative. The profoundly misinformed rep also wrongly told us that "the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have determined that existing biotech foods are safe and do not differ in any meaningful way from other food." Really? And how did these agencies "determine" all this? By asking Monsanto, and then taking the biotech bully's word for it.
Santa
Cruz Organic and R.W. Knudsen are both owned by the J.M. Smucker Co.,
which contributed $555,000 to the $46-million war chest that helped
narrowly defeat California's Prop 37. Prop 37 was citizens' initiative
that would have required mandatory labeling of foods containing GMOs.
Please sign the letter below. Tell executives at Smucker's that you
won't buy their products – or the products of their organic subsidiaries
- until they support state GMO labeling campaigns and discontinue all
financial support for anti-labeling efforts.
Smucker's, maker of products that are part of a staple diet for millions
of American children, has successfully branded itself as a company that
provides tasty, wholesome food for kids. In reality, the company sells a
myriad of unhealthy products chock full of GMOs - including High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a big contributor to America's growing obesity problem.
Conflicts of Interest, Selling Out Children's Health, and Denying Consumer Choice
Smucker's serves on the Board of the Grocery Manufacturers Association
(GMA), an organization on record claiming HFCS, full of GMO corn, is
"natural." The GMA spent $2 million to defeat Prop 37 which it claimed
was its "single highest priority" for the year.
The GMA's membership reads like a virtual who's who of anti-worker,
anti-health and anti-family farmer interests. Members include
outsourcing trendsetter Bain and Company, notorious polluter Dow
Chemical, anti-union heavyweights Safeway Inc. and Bayer, and Monsanto,
the world's largest pesticide corporation.
Julia Sabin, Vice President, Industry and Government Affairs at Smucker's, just recently served as the President of the Board of the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
The OTA sells itself as a friend to the organic movement when in fact
it's a trade association which represents large multinational companies
that sell "natural" and conventional products made with GMO ingredients.
Companies like Smucker's oppose labeling because they've built a
business model that relies on a lack of food system transparency.
Labeling GMOs threatens their stranglehold on consumer choice, and
prevents small farmers, the organics industry, and truly natural food
producers from competing on an equal playing field.
Please the petition. Tell executives at Smucker's that you
won't buy their products – or the products of their organic subsidiaries
- until they support state GMO labeling campaigns and discontinue all
financial support for anti-labeling efforts.

All food is organic!
My nickname is Bunny, a name I've had for 70 years!
Sorry, nuff said.
The submissive response is to surrender and eat any of the crap these companies produce. The cynical response is to claim that, in this day and age, most politicians, sport stars, entertainment celebrities, and so on, are seldom as personable or as honest as promoted. Why would food be any different? It's no secret that slapping food product packaging with the proclamation that it's ORGANIC (given the somewhat lax or at least not strictly enforced FDA guidelines for that) is really just a...
…The submissive response is to surrender and eat any of the crap these companies produce. The cynical response is to claim that, in this day and age, most politicians, sport stars, entertainment celebrities, and so on, are seldom as personable or as honest as promoted. Why would food be any different? It's no secret that slapping food product packaging with the proclamation that it's ORGANIC (given the somewhat lax or at least not strictly enforced FDA guidelines for that) is really just a ploy for dollars. O$G$N$C. Then, when a company seems to have confirmed it is "organic", but is really a cheat, well, that just supports the whole conclusion that the system is corrupt and few can be trusted. Santa Cruz, an "organic" company, hobknobbing with Monsanto. Gee, that's what they call a RED FLAG. That's like discovering that an idealistic, untainted animal rights group has been meeting for strategy marketing with the Pork Growers of America.
One answer: drastically reduce the purchase of products from major producers. Make your own. It's gratifying, it's usually more healthful, on balance it's usually cheaper, and for those reasons it's good revenge. As far as it's practical, I'll walk an extra mile to save a dollar on the crap at the standard neighborhood grocery store so I can buy something that meets quality standards at my food co-op.
Choice= the power and voice of the consumer. Choose wisely.
Right on Rachel ! :) Probably the most power of people/the masses dealing with all corporations,companies,governments... ect... They will make only produce what they can sell... The addiction to things "we want" and do not need is biggest trouble to getting us all to do The right thing...Smartest thing for our healthiest survival .... CHOICE=POWER ! :) like

Sorry, Louise.....my French is far in my past. You said....."marque de beurre d'arachide" I translate that as: "brand of SPIDER BUTTER?????!!!!!!!!!!!" Please explain--in French, I'll decipher as best I can...(No wonder everyone now has sick stomachs....)

Liars come in all shapes and forms but we've known about Monsanto "raping" farmers and consumers for quite a few years, but guess who has the most money to by their own lies? Ugh. More of the same---money and politics,
Leslii McCaskill You might be interested in checking out the Cornucopia Institute... right out of the Coulee region. They are doing good work. http://www.cornucopia.org
I used to buy Smucker's products because of the quality - although I always thought that they could have used a better name. Now I realize that I would be a schmuck to continue to support them. Today it is unfortunate that we have to spend so much time researching before we can take a bite of anything.
Smuckers
Smuckers is not a company I trust.
Human beings were never designed to be experimental guina pigs, we have a threshold that when we expose our bodies to chemical/or organisms the result is disease/and or cancer....stop screwing with our food!
Stop poisoning us for Monsanto's profits!
