When the ground thaws and the first spring rains fall, thousands of salamanders, frogs, and toads are stirred from their winter slumber. They make short, stealthy migrations to breed and lay their eggs in vernal pools. In many places across NJ, roads now stand in their way. As few as 15 cars per hour can kill more than 50% of all amphibians attempting to cross. With high mortality rates year after year, it doesn't take long for populations to nose-dive.

Over the past decade, our teams have hit the streets each spring to protect them. We have nudged, escorted, or carried more than 10,000 amphibians to safety while collecting important data at dozens of amphibian crossings in NJ.  Now we're moving to the next level - designing special culvert projects to give the animals safe passage, permanently

This year, we ask for your help to purchasing safety equipment, traffic control services, and basic survey materials to expand the project even further and collect enough data to support our culvert plans. Let's save some salamanders!
