Will President Obama Set a Plan for Vulnerable Children and Families?

I pledge to listen on behalf of children and families during the State of the Union address.

On Tuesday at 9 pm Eastern, President Obama will give the annual State of the Union (SOTU) address, laying out his agenda for the year. In the wake of his re-election and at the start of his final term in office, it's a prime time for President Obama to ambitiously tackle some of America's most pressing challenges. If his most recent inaugural address is an indication of his agenda, then there's a real possibility that vulnerable children and families could be a focus.

PLEDGE

Will you pledge to tune in on Tuesday night? Will you listen to the President's speech with an attention to specific plans for promoting child well-being and addressing the widespread poverty that compromises it?

Preventing child maltreatment involves ensuring that families have the stability to meet their children's basic needs and help them flourish. A plan that ensures resources are available to help families overcome health, mental health and substance abuse challenges; provide quality educational opportunities for their children; and secure economic self-sufficiency with housing, education, training and work supports is a plan that will keep children safely in families that nurture their healthy development.

SPEAK UP

After you pledge to listen to the SOTU on behalf of children and families, be sure to tell the President what you're up to. Direct a message on social media or contact the White House directly. Say that you too are concerned about vulnerable Americans and believe it's within our communal potential to end child maltreatment and poverty. Tell the President you want to hear his plans for leading this effort. And keep talking to the President about what you thought of his speech after he gives it.

Last night we heard President Obama focus on the American economy. As we listened for children and families, we heard him specifically address many issues that directly affect them. He spoke of opening "the doors of opportunity to every child" and building "new ladders of opportunity into the middle class." He proposed universal pre-Kindergarten (pre-K) education, because "the sooner a child begins learning, the better he or she does down the road." He followed this with additional education reforms to incentivize expanded skills in high school education and improved college affordability and value in the Higher Education Act. He also made a strong call for gun control legislation to keep our children safe, declaring that his speech "matters little if we don't come together to protect our most precious resource, our children."

For families, the President proposed raising the minimum wage and indexing it to inflation, stating that "in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty." He discussed removing financial deterrents to marriage for low-income couples and doing more to encourage responsible fatherhood. He also talked about immigration reform and extreme poverty internationally that would keep families together and promote well-being across the world. In addition to several specific ideas for creating jobs, he made clear that budget negotiations must not cut health care, education or public safety. He asserted, "we can't just cut our way to prosperity." Other mentions of the Violence Against Women Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act and voting reform are additional aspects of the agenda that would touch the lives of vulnerable children and families.

Will you respond to the president's agenda? If you want to applaud his bold call for universal pre-K, be sure to tell him. If you think an increase in the minimum wage is overdue, let the President know. If you believe he should have made a stronger case for preserving safety net programs, speak up. On these and other issues raised and missed in the speech, it's up to you to make the case.

The President made clear that the democratic process isn't easy or automatic. He needs you to push the federal government and Congress to do what you think should be done. Will you push for vulnerable children and families? Use the Citizen Response Tool (http://www.whitehouse.gov/sotu-response) to raise the bar for children and families.

Fernando Paulo Baptista ..well said and well done.

Fernando Paulo Baptista

Thanks, Dear Regina.

Obama's only intention is to bankrupt America. He will take more from my pocket & declare it is to help the children, when in actuality, it will only create bigger government, more welfare, & less personal responsibility. The history is right in front of your eyes folks. What party has run our largest cities since the 60's? Would you be willing to live in the inner cities? Our entire nation will be one big inner city if Obama gets his way. Go ahead parents, let our WONDERFUL politicians raise your children...not your responsibility now is it?

Kathy Sellars Bush Bush is all You liberals can say. When will You realize that obama has done nothing but give to people that don't want to work and tax those that do work more. His {1/2 anyway}{ working peopls} have done worse under Him than before.

Lenean Priester

All I can do is laugh at your comments Dani Harris and shake my head. I watched first hand the sabotage with the ARRA funds, too much hate in this world and this is why we have the rate of unemployment as it is... You ought to operate more in love and then you might be able to see clearer.

Protect parents and their children.

David Gilchrist

How true, from bad people and bad role models.

Obama is trying to fix issues in the world but between Congress and the wealthy that worry about their pockets Obama can't get things done.

Helen Finelt

Obama is not fixing anything. He is only out to destroy U.S. OF AMERICA. He is trying to make America like Russia used to be.YOU ARE ALL BRAINWASHED. He is no good. Communism. On the Internet Obama Communist Ties. Read it.

my great grand daughter, Ameera's future is all about this! she was molested twice, once by her dad and then his brother. still has visitation rights?

David Gilchrist

That is wrong period, liberal or consertive. Children need to be protected, but taught respect for authority and elders. Not a government day care. They need to be shown by parents to care for others and not only themselves and shown that work and self supporitive is the only way.
