Petition: Keep America’s Children Safe

To: President Obama and U.S. Congress

I support the call for a National Commission on Children’s Safety. Every child deserves a happy and safe childhood. But for too many, including the 20 young lives lost in Newtown, CT, that isn’t a reality.

I support the call for a National Commission on Children’s Safety. Every child deserves a happy and safe childhood. But for too many, including the 20 young lives lost in Newtown, CT, that isn’t a reality.

On behalf of America’s children, we call on President Obama and Congress to establish a new National Commission on Children to:

  1. Create a national policy on children
  2. Set goals for protecting children's well-being, including reducing poverty &  violence
  3. Monitor progress on stated goals
Kids are growing up in a different world – it’s time for bold, new ideas. We can safeguard our children from violence at home and in school. We can ensure that all kids, especially those living in poverty, reach their full potential. We can do more. If we can, we must.

During the State of the Union address on February 12, 2013 President Obama will describe where we stand as a nation—our triumphs, our shortcomings and our obligation to build a better future for children.

We have been made starkly aware of where America is falling short in its promise to our own children in the past several months.  From staggering childhood poverty rates, to inadequate disaster preparedness, to the tragic events in Newtown, we are not giving today's children the tools they need to be healthy, safe, and successful.

That's why Save the Children is joining forces with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, Catholic Charities USA, Child Care Aware® of America, Children's Health Fund, Every Child Matters, First Focus, Girls Inc., Harlem Children's Zone, KaBOOM!, National Association of School Nurses, Share Our Strength, and the YMCA to call on President Obama and Congress to establish a new National Commission on Children to ensure the safety and well-being of every child.

I hope each one of you will sign the petition and share it with your network to show the White House that we have the momentum, the commitment, and the collective voice of tens of thousands of Americans to demand meaningful change for children.

Thank you for your support.

Warmly,

Mark Shriver
