Snail mail plays a big role in winning big campaigns. The difference between snail mail and e-mail is...

E-Mail always shows the recepient the subject line. e.g. You send an e-mail titled "End Bear Baiting in South Carolina now!". Office staff sees the subject line and hits the delete button. Office staff can select and delete mass quantities of E-Mails at a glance. E-Mails that you spent your time writing!

Snail mail on the other hand, requires hand delivery to the office, it must be opened manually by office staff and the subject is not revealed until the letter is opened. This presents a unique problem for offices. Since there will always be incoming mail that deals with other orders of business, it is mandatory that every single letter is opened. Otherwise, other business will be ignored.

Offices feel the pressure when a huge influx of snail mail comes in as resources are tapped and the attention of all in the office is always brought back to the cause again and again. Eventually, even the postman might ask the governor to end bear baiting so he doesn't have to haul all those letters!

Bottom line is ... if you want to save these bears .... if you really want to do it .... then please send in a respectful letter to the governor by U.S. post.

We're going to win this one in the end folks. Other pledges to come soon.

For the bears!

    SAMPLE LETTER BELOW

Gov. Nikki Haley, Commerce to host 23rd annual Rural Summit in Aiken this March, COLUMBIA, S.C. – Governor Nikki Haley and the South Carolina Department of Commerce will host rural and economic development leaders from across South Carolina next month for the 23rd annual South Carolina Rural Summit, presenting a program that will challenge attendees to improve local communities.

The Summit will be held at the Municipal Center, located at 214 Park Avenue SE, in Aiken on Monday, March 4, beginning at 8:30 AM.

"Rural communities across our state play an important role in South Carolina's economic success. The Rural Summit provides a chance for local leaders to come together and share ideas about how to make their communities more competitive in attracting investment," said Gov. Nikki Haley.

SAMPLE LETTER ... FEEL FREE TO USE!!

    Dear Governor Haley,

It is so important to enhance the image of South Carolina's rural communities by showing America that South Carolina rejects bear baying, recognizes it as a cruel and outdated practice and takes action to free the bears that are suffering under the permits issued by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Activities such as bear baying that are so widely opposed, can never promote investment in rural communities. In fact, it does quite the opposite. A small special interest group is successfully damaging the perceived image of South Carolina rural communities as news continues to circulate in regards to their continued failure to end documented and ongoing acts of cruelty related to bear baying.

We, the people, respectfully ask that you request the required documentation from the Committee on Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs as referred to them in the 119th session of the South Carolina General Assembly on February 15th, 2011. We ask that you issue a request to have the process expedited so Section 16-27-80(A) of the 1976 Code, as last amended by Act 345 of 2006 and Section 50-11-430(D)(6) of the 1976 Code, as last amended by Act 286 of 2010 can be amended and written into law as soon as possible.

Thank you for your leadership in amending South Carolina law to benefit rural businesses and communities.

I will do it! May I suggest you include in this post or a follow up, a sample letter people can mail? This can help those who may struggle with what to write and opt not to mail it.:)

Just FYI Tim, the word 'bating' is reflected as 'baying'. Thanks for the sample letter, I already wrote a card (with a polar bear on the front with 'peace on earth') and appreciate seeing how you approach this for future correspondence on this case or any other. Thanks for taking the time.

Hi Crystal, It is called both bear baiting and bear baying. In the proposed legislation, it is referred to as "bear baying". The reason they call it bear baying is ... the dogs are supposed to keep the bear "at bay". However, it always ends up that the dogs don't keep the bear at bay, they viciously attack it for hours on end. It's a veiled way to promote an animal pit fight. The bears always lose though.

Ok, I wasn't raised here in the States, I'm not very familiar with options post office provide as it comes to mail delivery. Do I ask for it to be Certified or Registered mail? These are the two I know of. Please help!

Tim Martell

To certify or register it you will have to go to a postal outlet. You should ask them but I think you need to go registered.

Absolutely, it's very important to show the governor that not just people in America care about these suffering bears, but people from around the world. PLEASE send your letter. Thank you so much.

Unfortunately, I can't take this pledge because I'm not from the U.S., but please, Americans, do this and end this horror!

I am European too and I am sending it by post, you can do it too if you really want it to stop. They must realise the world is looking at them.
