The Cedar Grove Community Hub is a volunteer-run relief center in the New Dorp Beach neighborhood of Staten Island which has been helping those affected by Hurricane Sandy from the day after the storm hit. What started as Barbecue thrown by concerned community residents, has grown into a multi-service community hub and relief center, in one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods of Staten Island.

The Cedar Grove Community Hub serves hundreds of hot meals everyday from 10 am to 10 pm to neighborhood residents, volunteers, utility workers - anyone who is hungry really - no questions asked. It serves as a drop-off center for those who want to give, and offers clean clothing, personal care items, cleaning supplies, tools, water, heaters, and much, much more to neighborhood residents who are in dire need of assistance. It has also served as a base of operations for volunteers who have come into the neighborhood, looking to help residents gut and clean their badly-damaged homes.

Most importantly, The Cedar Grove Community Hub is a safe, warm place where those who have been hit hardest by Sandy can come together to support one another as they struggle to put their lives back together.

Because of the serious absence of any form of help or information coming from all levels of government, volunteer hubs like this one have literally become lifelines of support to thousands of Staten Island residents who have been displaced, left homeless, or are living in unsafe conditions in half-destroyed homes, still without basic necessities - heat, electricity, gas, power, plumbing, and running water.

Last week, officials from the Mayor's Office and the NYC Parks Department informed The Cedar Grove Community Hub that it would need to vacate Park property by May 8th, 2013. By signing this petition, you are standing with thousands of Staten Island residents and demanding that the Cedar Grove Community Hub be able to stay open and continue to help those who need it most.

Spread the word.

    Hello Again!

Because 2,000 of you took the time to sign this petition and show your support for the Cedar Grove Community Hub, it appears now that this incredible relief center is no longer under the threat of a shutdown by Mayor Bloomberg. I can't thank you enough for standing up for the people of Staten Island who needed your help.

I'm writing to you today to let you know about another way you can show your support for those hit-hard by Sandy – it's an event called "Walk a Mile in Our Shoes".

I'm writing to you today to let you know about another way you can show your support for those hit-hard by Sandy – it's an event called "Walk a Mile in Our Shoes".

This Saturday, January 12th, across Sandy-affected areas of New York and New Jersey, thousands of people will walk side-by-side with Sandy survivors to show their support and demand that Congress pass the Sandy Relief Bill on January 15th. By "walking a mile" with Sandy survivors through these devastated neighborhoods, you will not only be giving these people much-needed support; you will be helping to bring much-needed media attention to these communities.

For those interested in taking part in the event in Staten Island, the walk will take place in the New Dorp Beach neighborhood – right past the Cedar Grove Community Hub. Organizers ask that you come to the corner of Ebbitts Street and Cedar Grove Ave. at 8:30 AM and the walk will begin at 9AM.

For more information about the Staten Island "Walk a Mile in Our Shoes" event and the others taking place simultaneously in New York (The Rockaways, Gerritsen Beach, Coney Island, Island Park) and New Jersey (Seaside, Keansburg/Union Beach, and Brigantine) visit:

    Thanks again for your support!

    All the Best,

    Dan
