"No More".

After 15 people were killed and 21 injured in Columbine, we said, "No More". We said it again after Gaby Giffords, and others, were shot in Tuscon. And again in Colorado. And again in Wisconsin. And again in Minnesota.

"No More".

On Friday, December 14, 2012 the residents of Newtown, Connecticut began their day like any other. Like the close-knit, loving people they are, they kissed each other good-bye and went off to work and school. Their heads, no doubt, filled with the joy and excitement of Christmas, which is fast approaching.

No one could ever have imagined the unspeakable, unthinkable horror that was about to shake this small, picturesque, jewel of a town to its very core. Shake all of America to its very core.

On Friday, December 14, 2012, a disturbed gunman, who also lived in this affluent community, blasted his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School; and mercilessly and brutally slaughtered 20 innocent 6 and 7 year olds. He also mercilessly and brutally slaughtered the 6 adults who tried to save their lives, before killing himself.

Unlike his neighbours, he had no love in his heart.

So what are we going to say this time? "No More", doesn't work. At least not when there isn't an 'action' that goes along with it:

Do we, for once and for all, have to get assault weapons off our streets? Yes. But that's not the entire problem. Nothing will work until we begin to acknowledge and address our mental health care crisis. Because it's when guns find their way into the 'wrong' hands, that the unimaginable happens.

According to Human Rights Watch, at this very moment there are 1.25 million prison and jail inmates who suffer from mental health issues. An illness these institutions are ill equipped to deal with.

And what about all those who aren't incarcerated? All those living in our communities? Just like Adam Lanza. Or in our cities and states. And all across our nation. What about all the Adam Lanzas.

First up, we have to address the stigma associated with mental illness. So sufferers and their families will not ignore symptoms, for fear of being ostracized. So sufferers and their families will not forgo medical attention and counseling and medication, because they're embarrassed, or ashamed.

We also have to address the elephant in the room. Who's going to pay for it? How? And then we have to tackle the NRA.

Yes. The problem facing us is huge. Complex. And a political hot potato. But for how much longer can we watch innocent people murdered? For how much longer can we fear for our lives everytime we go to a mall, or to a movie, or to school. There's only one answer.

"No More".

Sign our petition today. Tell President Obama, members of Congress, Mental Health Professionals and Patient Advocates that we want "No More' violence. "No More" senseless deaths. The 20 first grade students who had their lives taken away from them, were the future of this country. They still can be, if we all sign this petition today. They still can be, if we make our voices, and theirs, heard in Washington. Let's show them how much we still love them.

First, we see images of the six educators killed in December's Newtown, Conn., school shooting, and the headline "These teachers sacrificed their lives for the children they worked for." That's followed by pictures of the 45 U.S. senators whose recent votes killed the proposal to extend background checks on firearm sales. "These senators voted against protecting the children they work for," the copy says. As users scroll down, successive screens show individual lawmakers alongside images of kids who died from gun violence (and who, according to Guts & Glory, might not have perished if stricter firearms laws had been in place). Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) appears first, paired with 6-year-old Newtown victim Charlotte Bacon. Text reads, "Sen. Alexander doesn't work for kids like Charlotte," and urges visitors to ask him why via phone, email and social media. This basic template is then repeated 44 times, plugging in a different legislator and slain child.

    What a team!

Thanks for making the effort to reach out to some friends, and to the almost 1,000 people who signed in the last 5 days, thank you.  We're wondering how much more we can do before we go to DC to deliver the petition.

Yesterday's article in the New York Times reminded us how important this issue is.  33 Americans die every day from gun violence, and we believe that in this century that's avoidable.

When Zina Haughton, 42, got a restraining order against her husband, Radcliffe, last October — she told a court that his threats "terrorize my every waking moment" — he became ineligible to buy a gun under federal law. But he found a way around that: he bought a gun from a private seller he found on the Internet who, unlike federally licensed dealers, was not legally required to check his background.

A Houston gun shop worker reviewed a customer's application as part of a background check for a handgun sale.

That is how Mr. Haughton was able to buy a handgun for $500 in the parking lot of a McDonalds that he took with him on Oct. 21 to the spa in a suburb of Milwaukee where his wife worked. There, Mr. Haughton opened fire at the spa's pedicure station, law enforcement officials said, and kept shooting until he had killed his wife and two women she worked with and injured four other women. He then killed himself.

Ms. Haughton's brother, Elvin Daniel, a hunter who belongs to the National Rifle Association, has traveled to Washington to call for expanded background checks. "I feel that had there been a background check, had that been in place, my sister would still be with us today," he said Wednesday.

Thanks for getting the petition to over 5,000 signatures.  Let's not forget Sandy Hook, but let's not forget the 33 Americans who will die today either, Americans like Zina Haughton.

Thanks for continuing to promote the petition, thanks for continuing to push for change, working together we can stop abuse and violence.

    Andrew & Kenny

PS. Of course if we all get just one friend to sign too we'll have 10,000 signatures - and that would be better still!
