We Demand A Plan to End Gun Violence – NOW! The school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut is a tragedy beyond comprehension. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones and the community that has been shattered by this horrific act of violence. "We can't tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them we must change." -Barack Obama in Newtown, CT President Obama gave a moving speech and promised to take action to prevent future tragedies. But the harsh truth is that we’ve heard this promise before. After Aurora. After Tucson. After Virginia Tech. After Columbine. Promises are not enough. We need action.

The school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut is a tragedy beyond comprehension. Working together, we can bring about meaningful, commonsense gun reform in this country. One of the most important things you can do is sign and share this petition with as many of your family and friends as possible. We need to show that there is a large movement of people coming together to Demand A Plan!

In addition to signing and sharing the petition, see below for more ways to take action and get involved.

MAKE SOME CALLS
Call President Obama and your members of Congress.

- Call the White House: 202-456-1111
- Look up your Senator
- Look up your Representatives

Tell him or her:
- I urge you to support requiring a criminal background check for every gun buyer.
- 40% of all gun sales are private-party sales and are not subject to a background check under Federal law.
- We need background checks on all gun sales to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

REACH OUT TO YOUR MAYOR
Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a bipartisan coalition of more than 725 mayors - representing 57 million Americans – who support common-sense gun laws.

Find out if your mayor is in the coalition here. If they are, thank them!

If they aren't, contact them and mention:
- There are 34 gun murders every day in the U.S.
- Please join the 725+ mayors – from 43 different states – in our bipartisan coalition.
- This is not about the Second Amendment. It's about keeping guns out of dangerous hands.

USE SOCIAL MEDIA
Advocate for change on Twitter and Facebook. Click the blue buttons above to share the petition.

You should tweet about the issue and consider using the hashtag #DemandAPlan.

ORGANIZE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

People of faith across the country will be hosting a Sabbath to Stop Gun Violence on the Jan. 5-6, 2013. We'll send out more information as it becomes available.

WRITE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
When sending a letter to your local newspaper you might want to note:

- More than 725 mayors – representing 57 million Americans – support common-sense gun laws. Congress should too!
- Gun owners are also worried about illegal guns. In fact, 74 percent of NRA members agree that we should require background checks for all gun sales.

DON'T BE SILENCED
Stay committed. With each new mass shooting, pundits and politicians like to say that now is not the time. We work alongside gun violence survivors and family members of victims. Their message is crystal clear: we cannot let moments of silence replace meaningful action. Now IS the time – and your help will make a big difference.

Code Pink will be sending out updates on their work over the coming weeks, so you'll hear about Senator Reid's response and any next steps we can take a group.

Let's keep up the pressure on this issue.

    Happy holidays to all!

Takk for det Marie <3

I invite everyone to consider that unless we compromise our Second Amendment right to bear arms, we're smart to focus on what inspires us to want to hurt or to kill another person. Laws don't solve the problems. They only change the paths of fruition of murder in this case. Legislation is a small piece of the solution that we emphasize because we don't know what else to do and we cop out. People kill when love is missing and other reasons, e.g. mental illness. What can we do as individuals...

What can we do as individuals and as groups to rush in the love? Unless we look there, our efforts are silly and futile. Thank you for your partnership in remembering that we are One and Love! ♥

Gun acquisitions obtained on the streets are less subject to gun control laws, obviously, e.g., obtaining the tools of gang violence. Therefore, who will be subject to gun control laws? Hint, look at the Second Amendment. It addresses our right to the legal acquisition and ownership of guns. It is necessary to have the right to bear arms in order to be able to quickly form militias to protect ourselves from corrupt States. Remember, government organizations and other legally armed agencies are made up of individual people who might be or might become corrupt against the People. Some of us feel that we must be able to protect ourselves against that. What do you think? ♥

Very true...there's lack of real love (unconditional love) in this world. Though not on purpose, most of us don't experience it, or even know how to give it. It's one of the most basic human needs.

I have been in favor of gun control because of the unnecessary harm guns can do when in the wrong hands. The problem isn't guns purchased for hunting purposes as long as that remains what they are used for. But I've always known that an owned gun more often can be used against you, than used to protect you. I'm not at all confident that gun ownership is a good thing and recent events-within the last two or three years-have proven that guns have gotten in to the very worst of hands.

How do you feel about this?

Chris has it right. The media only shows up when guns are used the the bad. They never report when they are used for good.

Ronald Reiman

The death toll from guns keep on rising. When will it stop? How do you stop a bad man from shooting people? JUST CAN'T TRUST COPS CAN YOU.

Please, stop with this nonsense of allowing everybody to get assault arms at eny moment they wish. It's crazy, and you americans know it better than anyone in the world.¡¡¡STOP...STOP... STOP!

SIMPLY BAND CARRING ANY GUN SO SIMPLE.

COLLECT THE GUNS FROM MARKETS THEN YOU WILL NEVER CRY

I understand people's fear of having guns around our kids. I really do. I had a cousin who took his own life with our Grandpa's gun and that event scarred me for a long time. But my brother was a police liason officer in a metropolitan area High School & they NEVER had a school shooting & drug-related activity even nosedived when he was there. He became as familiar with those kids as their teachers. He became a fixture, someone they trusted to protect them. Just the police presence was a...

He became as familiar with those kids as their teachers. He became a fixture, someone they trusted to protect them. Just the police presence was a huge deterrent! We put ARMED Marshalls on our aircraft to protect airline passengers. Why are our children not entitled to the same level of security? I would even be willing to bet that instances of bullying would decrease as well.

Hee hee.....did ya hear that King Obama has 11 armed guards protecting the school that his daughter attends?
Talk about a walking talking contradiction.

I don't believe stricter gun laws will stop this from happening. Lanza did not buy his guns, he tried but could not. He stole them from his mother. I will agree there should be background checks, etc. but if we are going to look at stricter gun laws, we also need to address the other issues such has mental health, prescribed drugs, and violence in gaming and movies.

i agree kathy, im sure he needed to be watched as he was not in a right frame of mind.
