    Friends,

I wanted to address some of the comments on this page. First, this is not about taking away anyone's Second Amendment right to bear arms. I fully support the Second Amendment. I also want to assure everyone that if you signed the Sympathy Card, your name is not being used for any other petition. Friends,

I wanted to address some of the comments on this page. First, this is not about taking away anyone's Second Amendment right to bear arms. I fully support the Second Amendment. I also want to assure everyone that if you signed the Sympathy Card, your name is not being used for any other petition. Here's background on what's happened to this Cause since the shooting: After we delivered the Sympathy Card to the Sandy Hook families in December, 2012, we wanted to find a way to continue to help and support them. We spent more than a month working closely with leaders in Newtown -- many of them gun owners. About two months after the shooting, we decided it was important to keep this Cause active and honor their request that we support common sense solutions to gun violence in America. So moving forward we plan to continue to talk about, and advocate for, the need for responsible reform in many areas of the law, mental health, school safety, and yes, gun ownership. That's where we are headed. Again, I strongly support the Second Amendment, but I share the views espoused by Sandy Hook Promise and many gun owners that reform is needed in some areas. I do not believe that any type of legislation that involves guns is automatically bad. For instance, I joined with the majority of gun owners who support expanded criminal background checks as drafted in the U.S. Senate legislation. I also support limitations in high capacity magazines. Now many of you may agree, and many may not. That's freedom of speech. The First Amendment. But again, I want to assure everyone that if they signed the Sympathy Card, their name is not being used for any other purpose, and never will be! Second, if you do not want to remain as a member of this Cause moving forward, which I can understand if you have different beliefs, then you can easily remove yourself from the list by clicking "Leave this campaign" at the top of the main campaign page. Details here: http://support.causes.com/entries/20341536-How-do-I-leave-a-campaign-and-remove-it-from-my-profile. I do hope you'll stay, because open dialogue depends on differing points of view. But if you decide to leave, I wish you all the very best!

Your voices are being heard!  This morning (4/11/13) the U.S. Senate voted 68-31, including 16 Republicans, to approve the start of debate on a key measure that would require criminal background checks for most gun sales, except those between private parties and neighbors. This is a key initial victory for those who support common sense solutions to reduce gun violence. This measure was supported by many conservative, gun-owning Senators on both sides of the aisle. The U.S. Senate is scheduled to take action on this legislation tomorrow (Thursday, 4/11/13).

Just a quick update. We are just 15,000 signatures away from reaching a remarkable 2.5 million people who have joined in signing the Sandy Hook Sympathy Card. Any help you can provide by forwarding it to more friends would be much appreciated. We plan to keep this card open and are now exploring donating the page to the Sandy Hook families so they can continue to make the card available on their own website, which should launch soon.

Friends and family were asked to wear the color purple at Josephine Gay's funeral --- the little girl's favorite color. She had just turned 7-years-old this month. Her parents say she was autistic and though she could not speak, she touched the lives of so many around her-- with hugs and her sense of humor. Also buried were 6-year-old Ana Grace Marquez-Green. The little girl from a family of jazz musicians, loved to dance and sing. The family of beautiful Emilie Parker said its goodbyes as well, and thousands of pink ribbons were tied to fences, trees and signs in the 6-year-olds native town of Ogden, Utah.

This will be my last update regarding the sympathy card. Thank you for all your support. I know that your personal expression of condolence has meant, and still means, a great deal to the community of Newtown.

    Best wishes,

    David

    Friends,

I am pleased to report that we have been invited to formally present the National Sympathy Card to First Selectman Patricia Llodra and the community of Newtown at the candle light vigil on Friday, December 21, at 7pm at Fairfield Hills in Newtown. The township also hopes to display some of the signatures at its Municipal Center, subject to space. Tomorrow we will have more information also on the beautiful new web landing page that Causes.com is custom creating to support the National Sympathy Card. I have seen an early version, and it is very moving. So stay tuned. Right now we are approaching 2.3 million signatures, spanning all 50 states, 140 countries, 31 languages represented and 5412 towns worldwide . If possible, let's all work together to achieve our current goal of 2,500,000 signatures. We'll get there if everyone shares the card with a few more friends.

I wish you all the very best and will post another update on Friday morning.
