Judge denies appeal from Lake Worth nursing home in $2 million wrongful death case

A judge has denied a new trial for the owners of a Lake Worth nursing home who late last year were ordered to pay nearly $2 million to the family of a former patient — marking one of the largest jury awards statewide for a wrongful death case involving a nursing home.

Former Boynton Beach resident George Dahmer, who for more than 32 years was a professional wrestler under the stage name "Chief White Owl", died in May 2008 after family members and their attorney Joe Landy say Lake Worth Manor nursing home employees thoroughly neglected him.

Lake Worth Enterprises, which has since changed Lake Worth Manor's name to Oasis, said Dahmer had suffered from multiple diseases and had been treated at four different facilities by the time he died. In November, after a week-long trial, the case ended with a jury ordering them to pay $1,775,000 to Dahmer's family and company officials vowing to appeal.

They filed a motion for a new trial with Circuit Judge Robin Rosenberg, but Rosenberg late last month rejected the petition.

"We continue to consider all legal avenues," a spokesperson for the company said today.

Dahmer's family, meanwhile, has started an online petition atwww.chiefwhiteowlwon.com aimed at forging nursing home reform in the state — a goal Dahmer's widow Patricia said was her chief aim. Dahmer's daughter, Debbie said, the petition has received nearly 2,000 signatures.

"It's been tough," Debbie Dahmer said of coping with the loss of her father. "But we realize that we're not alone. We've gotten support from other families, nurses and other people in the industry that realize that it has got to change."
